The art of molecular carpet-weaving

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Even the costliest oriental carpets have small mistakes. It is said that pious carpet-weavers deliberately include tiny mistakes in their fine carpets, because only God has the right to be immaculate. Molecular carpets, as the nanotechnology industry would like to have them are as yet in no danger of offending the gods. A team of physicists headed by Dr. Markus Lackinger from the Technische Universit?t M?nchen (TUM) und Professor Thomas Bein from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit?t M?nchen (LMU) has now developed a process by which they can build up high-quality polymer networks using boron acid components.

The "carpets" that the physicists are working on in their laboratory in the Deutsches Museum M?nchen consist of ordered two-dimensional structures created by self-organized boron acid molecules on a graphite surface. By eliminating water, the molecules bond together in a one-atom thick network held together solely by chemical bonds ? a fact that makes this network very stable. The regular honey-comb-like arrangement of the molecules results in a nano-structured surface whose pores can be used, for instance, as stable forms for the production of metal nano-particles.

The molecular carpets also come in nearly perfect models; however, these are not very stable, unfortunately. In these models the bonds between the molecules are very weak ? for instance hydrogen bridge bonds or van der Waals forces. The advantage of this variant is that faults in the regular structure are repaired during the self-organization process ? bad bonds are dissolved so that proper bonds can form.

However, many applications call for molecular networks that are mechanically, thermally and/or chemically stable. Linking the molecules by means of strong chemical bonds can create such durable molecule carpets. The down side is that the unavoidable weaving mistakes can no longer be corrected due to the great bonding strength.

Markus Lackinger and his colleagues have now found a way to create a molecular carpet with stable covalent bonds without significant weaving mistakes. The method is based on a bonding reaction that creates a molecular carpet out of individual boron acid molecules. It is a condensation reaction in which water molecules are released. If bonding takes place at temperatures of a little over 100?C with only a small amount of water present, mistakes can be corrected during weaving. The result is the sought after magic carpet: molecules in a stable and well-ordered one-layer structure.

Markus Lackinger's laboratory is located in the Deutsches Museum M?nchen. There he is doing research at the Chair of Prof. Wolfgang Heckl (TUM School of Education, TU M?nchen). Prof. Bein holds a Chair at the Department of Chemistry at the LMU. The research was conducted in collaboration with Prof. Paul Knochel's work group (LMU) and Physical Electronics GmbH, with funding by the Excellence Cluster Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) and the Bavarian Research Foundation (BFS).

Intel starts shipping Atom N2600, N2800 processors for netbooks, ten hours of battery life promised

We've already seen a few benchmarks and other hints that they'd soon be shipping, and Intel has now officially announced that its new Cedar Trail Atom processors are finally available, with the first systems using them set to roll out early next year. The two chips you'll likely be seeing the most of are the Atom N2600 and N2800 -- both dual-core, and both designed for use in netbooks, where they promise to allow for up to ten hours of battery life and "weeks of standby," and offer support for 1080p video playback. Also rolling out today are the D2500 and D2700, which are designed for use in entry-level desktops and all-in-one computers, as well as more commercial systems. As for all those systems themselves, details remain a bit light, but Intel says you can expect to see some from Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Toshiba.

Parolee gets 10 years in animal abuse case

-- A Sacramento judge has sentenced a parolee convicted of animal abuse to serve 10 years in state prison and ordered him to register as a sex offender.

Robert DeShields was ordered to serve the maximum prison sentence Friday after being convicted of felony animal cruelty for the sexual abuse of a Chihuahua mix named "Shadow," the Sacramento Bee reported (http://bit.ly/t2zYlG).

The dog suffered severe injuries that required surgery and now lives in a foster home, the newspaper said.

DeShields, 55, described by the prosecution as a chronic methamphetamine user, was convicted after a trial that included graphic testimony.

During Friday's hearing, Sacramento County Deputy District Attorney Hilary Bagley-Franzoia argued that DeShields be should treated as a sexual offender for the rest of his life because he is a danger to society.

"The public needs to be on alert," she said.

In sentencing DeShields, Superior Court Judge Thadd Blizzard said the nature of the case was "inherently sexual in nature."

Bagley-Franzoia said it may be the first time that Jessica's Law has been applied in a case involving sexual abuse of an animal.

The law, approved by California voters in 2006, lengthened sentences for sex offenders and placed other restrictions on them, including prohibiting them from within 2,000 feet of a park or school.

Defense attorney Jennifer Stoneburner said she would appeal.

Chavez appoints new military intelligence chief (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has replaced his military intelligence chief.

Chavez says he is appointing Gen. Wilfredo Figueroa Chacin as the new chief of the country's military intelligence agency.

The new appointee replaces Gen. Hugo Carvajal, one of the president's most trusted security chiefs.

Carvajal was one of three close Chavez allies who in 2008 were accused by the U.S. Treasury Department of helping Colombian rebels by supplying arms and aiding drug-trafficking operations.

Chavez has denied those accusations.

The president announced the change during a speech Saturday. He did not say why he made it or what plans he has for Carvajal.

Tougher Argentine terror laws concern opponents (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Argentina approved a tough package of new laws against terrorism and financial crimes Thursday, dismissing concerns that the government could use them to attack political opponents.

After three hours of post-midnight debate, the Senate agreed to double penalties for any crime committed with the goal of terrorizing the people or pressuring authorities to take some action. Human rights groups are concerned that the vaguely worded law will give future governments broad powers to crack down on social protests.

"Any crime under Argentine law committed with the goal of terrorism as described by international rules approved by our country will be punishable by twice the minimum and maximum sentence," the law says.

The laws also toughen penalties for tax evasion, money laundering, and acts that disrupt the country's economic order, for example by provoking a run on the banks. It also criminalizes insider trading and provides sentences of up to six years for passively benefiting from bribery.

The laws does apply some restraints to Argentina's money-laundering watchdog, saying the government's Financial Information Unit cannot freeze assets "that aren't related to acts of terrorism as defined by international conventions."

And after pressure from human rights activists, legislators adjusted the laws so that stiffer penalties cannot be applied to crimes that may occur in the context of "the exercise of human or social rights, or any other constitutional right."

Aides to President Cristina Fernandez sought to assure lawmakers that this government would never invoke the law to restrict the legitimate rights of Argentines.

But many Argentines remain worried that this or future governments will do exactly that.

Opposition Sen. Ernesto Sanz said it won't help solve financial crimes, and "opens the door to criminalizing social protest."

"Being ambiguous and using generalities starts us down the dangerous road of arbitrary use of authority," Sanz said.

Argentina is still grappling with the legacy of "state terror," when the 1976-1983 dictatorship sent out squads of undercover agents to kidnap, torture and summarily execute 13,000 political opponents, according to the official tally. But these laws don't address such crimes against humanity.

The country also experienced the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center that killed 85 people, two years after another bomb flattened the Israeli Embassy, killing 29. But terror laws have not been applied to either case. Prosecutors have invoked the existing criminal code instead.

Sen. Miguel Angel Pichetto, who leads the ruling party's bloc, acknowledged that the crackdown is being done under pressure from the United States, describing it as price of entry for Argentina to continue having a voice at international economic summits.

The laws are meant to conform with the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force, which was established by the G-7 countries to combat terror financing and money laundering worldwide.

But according to an investigation by The Associated Press for this year's 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, similar laws have been widely used around the globe to curb political dissent. The AP gathered government records worldwide and found that 120,000 people were arrested and 35,000 convicted as terrorists in the past decade.

Many were put behind bars simply for waving a political sign or publishing anti-government commentary.

The AP found that there is no agreed-upon international standard for what makes a terrorist, giving each country's leadership wide leeway to decide when to invoke these draconian laws. Even within the U.S. government, law enforcement agencies don't agree on what terrorism is.

The Avengers Will Screen in Post-Converted 3D

the avengers will be post-converted 3d

A lot of fans have been so caught up with the idea of just seeing Marvel Studio?s The Avengers?that any questions about the format of the film have been a distant second to excitement and anticipation. After both Thor and Captain America were post-converted into the 3D films, there were some rumblings that The Avengers would be 3D as well ? and today we know if that speculation was on point or not.

A Disney press release has confirmed that The Avengers will indeed be released in 3D as well as 2D. Since we know that Avengers was NOT filmed in 3D, this will mean that film will follow its 2011 lead-ins by being converted into the format during post-production.

We recently learned that Star Trek 2?will be post-converted to 3D as well, and our opinion on that news pretty much carries over to this latest situation: When planned for and handled with meticulous care, post-conversion 3D isn?t all that bad (see: Harry Potter Deathly Hallows: Part 2). Then again, no amount of planning or care with post-conversion 3D can equal the splendor of movies actually filmed in the format (See: Avatar, Transformers 3).

In this case, there?s no way to really tell how well (if it all) director Joss Whedon planned his shoot of The Avengers?around the 3D format. After all the great work that Marvel has put into building to this epic event, it?d be a shame if some lackluster 3D set it on a level of comparison with tripe like Clash of the Titans or Green Lantern - both of which boasted some truly terrible 3D conversions.

For our money, seeing The Avengers in 2D would be thrilling enough. How about you?

The Avengers assemble in theaters (2D and 3D) on May 4, 2012.

Adam Lambert says "lesson learned" after arrest (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Former "American Idol" finalist Adam Lambert brushed off his arrest in Finland on Thursday, blaming his bad behavior on travel, booze and "irrational confusion" and adding "lesson learned" on Twitter.

"Jetlag+Vodka=blackout. Us?blackout=irrational confusion. jail+guilt+press=lesson learned. Sauli+Adam+hangover burgers= laughing bout it. :)," Lambert tweeted to fans.

The "Whataya Want From Me" singer, 29, was involved in an argument in a Helsinki bar with his boyfriend, Finnish reality TV star Sauli Koskinen. Their quarrel became physical and the pair were arrested, questioned then later released by authorities, according to media reports.

Koskinen also addressed the incident on his blog, writing in Finnish, "publicity is not easy. But celebrities are only human people."

Lambert, whose colorful costumes and makeup earned him the nickname "Glambert," rose to fame in 2009 on U.S. singing contest "American Idol," but lost in the final round of the No. 1-rated TV show to Kris Allen.

Despite being the runner-up, Lambert forged a solid career and now enjoys a loyal following as a singer. His single "Better Than I Know Myself" was released on Tuesday, and is currently at No. 30 on the iTunes singles chart.

Forest health versus global warming: Fuel reduction likely to increase carbon emissions

Forest health versus global warming: Fuel reduction likely to increase carbon emissions

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

Forest thinning to help prevent or reduce severe wildfire will release more carbon to the atmosphere than any amount saved by successful fire prevention, a new study concludes.

There may be valid reasons to thin forests ? such as restoration of forest structure or health, wildlife enhancement or public safety ? but increased carbon sequestration is not one of them, scientists say.

In research just published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, Oregon State University scientists conclude that even in fire-prone forests, it's necessary to treat about 10 locations to influence fire behavior in one. There are high carbon losses associated with fuel treatment and only modest savings in reducing the severity of fire, they found.

"Some researchers have suggested that various levels of tree removal are consistent with efforts to sequester carbon in forest biomass, and reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels," said John Campbell, an OSU research associate in the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society. "That may make common sense, but it's based on unrealistic assumptions and not supported by the science."

A century of fire suppression in many forests across the West has created a wide range of problems, including over-crowded forests, increased problems with insect and pathogen attack, greater risk of catastrophic fire and declining forest health.

Forest thinning and fuel reduction may help address some of those issues, and some believe that it would also help prevent more carbon release to the atmosphere if it successfully reduced wildfire.

"There is no doubt you can change fire behavior by managing fuels and there may be other reasons to do it," said Mark Harmon, holder of the Richardson Chair in Forest Science at OSU. "But the carbon does not just disappear, even if it's used for wood products or other purposes. We have to be honest about the carbon cost and consider it along with the other reasons for this type of forest management."

Even if wood removed by thinning is used for biofuels it will not eliminate the concern. Previous studies at OSU have indicated that, in most of western Oregon, use of wood for biofuels will result in a net loss of carbon sequestration for at least 100 years, and probably much longer.

In the new analysis, researchers analyzed the effect of fuel treatments on wildfire and carbon stocks in several scenarios, including a single forest patch or disturbance, an entire forest landscape and multiple disturbances.

One key finding was that even a low-severity fire released 70 percent as much carbon as did a high-severity fire that killed most trees. The majority of carbon emissions result from combustion of surface fuels, which occur in any type of fire.

The researchers also said that the basic principles in these evaluations would apply to a wide range of forest types and conditions, and are not specific to just a few locations.

"People want to believe that every situation is different, but in fact the basic relationships are consistent," Campbell said. "We may want to do fuel reduction across much of the West, these are real concerns. But if so we'll have to accept that it will likely increase carbon emissions."
