Long-extinct cousins' genetic mysteries revealed

MPIEA

Ancient DNA was extracted and analyzed using a novel sequencing approach.

By Alan Boyle

Degraded DNA molecules from a group of human relatives who went extinct tens of thousands of years ago have been reassembled using a new technique, yielding a genetic code for the mysterious Denisovans that meets the standard for modern humans.

The findings are based on samples drawn from 40 milligrams of ground-up bone from a Siberian girl's finger. They confirm what scientists saw in a much less detailed genetic sequence they produced a couple of years ago, and address some of the deep questions surrounding the Denisovans. But they also raise a few new questions, including a basic one: Just how old was the sample they analyzed?

"The amazing thing is that we can sequence the whole genome to very high accuracy, but there is too little carbon in it to do a date," Svante P??bo, a genetic researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, told reporters during a teleconference this week. P??bo is the leader of the research team behind a paper on the project, published online today by the journal Science.

The finger bone was found in southern Siberia's Denisova Cave during an excavation in 2008. That dig was aimed at untangling the genetic relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans, and bones representing both those species were indeed found in the cave. But the initial analysis of the finger-bone sample revealed a genome that was neither Neanderthal nor classically human. That tiny bone and two molars that were also found in the cave represent the only known specimens of the Denisovan race.

MPIEA

A replica of the Denisovan girl's finger bone sits on a pinky finger, providing a sense of scale.

Previous analyses of the Denisovan genome were considered merely a rough draft, doing no better than an average of 1.9 readings for every molecular base pair in the DNA, or 1.9X. In comparison, the latest analysis goes to a coverage depth of 30X, which is typical of whole-genome sequencing for present-day humans.

The accuracy was increased by taking short, degraded double-strands of DNA, which couldn't be analyzed ?the usual tools for gene sequencing, and "unzipping" them into single strands. That made it easier to attach specially designed molecules known as adapters and read out the DNA code, piece by piece.

"There are many things you can do with such a high-coverage genome that you cannot do with the low-quality genome that we had before," said Matthias Meyer, a colleague of P??bo's at the Max Planck Institute who developed with the new sequencing technique. Here are the main findings reported today:

  • A comparison of chromosomes that the girl inherited from her mother and father indicated that there was surprisingly low genetic diversity in the Denisovan population. That would suggest that the Denisovan population never was very large, and could explain why the group faded into extinction as populations of modern humans spread out. The analysis also confirms that the girl carried genes that have been associated with dark skin, brown hair and brown eyes. "It is very likely that they were dark-skinned, and that is really everything we can say about that," P??bo?said, "The truth is, of course, that one can say quite little about how people looked from just studying the DNA sequences."?
  • Detailed study of the "gene flow" over time suggests that the Denisovans interbred with Neanderthals as well as our own species, Homo sapiens. The analysis confirmed previous findings that Denisovans were more genetically similar to Neanderthals than to anatomically modern humans. So does that mean that Denisovans were a separate species? "I really stay away from species designation," P??bo?said. "I would not call it a different species, but clearly different groups with a different history. I would not call the Neanderthals a different species from humans either, actually."
  • A comparison of the genome with those of modern-day human populations confirmed that Melanesians, Australian Aborigines and other Southeast Asian islanders had the most in common genetically with the Denisovans. The Denisovan contribution to the genomes of present-day Papuans was estimated at 6 percent.
  • A deeper analysis of the Papuan-Denisovan connection showed that the Denisovan contribution was lower for the sex-linked X chromosome than it was for other chromosomes. That might suggest that the Denisovan males were more likely than the females to interbreed with modern humans. Or it could mean there was a genetic defect on the X chromosome that led to its elimination from modern-day genomes.
  • The researchers were able to triangulate, using the Denisovan genome as well as the genetic codes for Neanderthals and modern humans, to come up with an unexpected result: Present-day east Asians and Native Americans appear to have more in common genetically with the Neanderthals than present-day Europeans, even though Europe was thought to be the main hangout for Neanderthals hundreds of thousands of years ago.
  • The researchers also drew up a catalog of more than 100,000 genetic differences that apparently arose between modern humans and the now-extinct Denisovans and Neanderthals in the past 100,000 years or so. About 260 of the changes affect protein function, P??bo said. "It's quite interesting to me to note that eight of them have to do with brain function and brain development ? the connectivity in the brain, how synapses between nerve cells function. And some of them have to do with genes that, for example, can cause autism when these genes are mutated," he said. "I think this is perhaps in the long term, to me, the most fascinating thing about this: what it will tell us in the future about what makes us special in the world, relative to Denisovans and Neanderthals."

Genetic sequencing alone can't tell scientists how long ago the Denisovans lived, however. P??bo and his colleagues factored in assumptions about the mutation rate of the human genome to estimate that the girl with the finger bone lived somewhere around 74,000 to 82,000 years ago. But a separate line of evidence, based on the rock layering in the cave, suggested that the bone was 30,000 to 50,000 years old.

"I'm very unsure about the archaeological dates, but I would say I'm equally unsure about our molecular dates," P??bo told reporters.

Similarly, the researchers give a wide range of dates for their estimate of the time when the Denisovan population split off from the evolutionary line leading to modern humans: 172,000 to 700,000 years ago.

"Most of the uncertainty in that number ... comes from the uncertainty at present about the human mutation rate," said another co-author of the paper, David Reich, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute. "There is a lot of debate in the community about the rate at which mutations accumulate."

Future studies, involving DNA analysis as well as carbon-dating analysis of other specimens from the Denisova Cave, may help clear up that uncertainty. But for the team behind the research announced today, an even higher priority is to generate a gene sequence for the Neanderthals that's as good as the sequence they now have for the once-mysterious Denisovans.

John Hawks, an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, said the newly published paper was "solid work."

"It's really neat that they've organized a catalog of things that humans have that are not present in this ancient genome," Hawks, who studies human origins but was not part of P??bo's research team, told me. He said the study of comparative brain genetics, for example, was becoming an increasingly important area, "and this study is part of it."

"We know that the human brain is a big target of evolution, but establishing the order of these changes is an important step now," he said. "This gives us a time stamp on some of those changes."

The technique developed for the Denisovan DNA could be applied much more widely in the future. Meyer said his method could be used on modern-day forensic samples that are too degraded to be analyzed using current techniques. And who knows? Anthropologists may find still more long-lost, extinct cousins in the fossil record whose genomes need to be done.

DALLAS, Aug. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?College fantasy football has not caught on like its NFL brethren. The traditional format where one drafts players does not translate well when there are more than 124 FBS teams and players typically only start for two years. But this month's launch of Pigskin Fantasy U (PFU) brings a fun new twist to college fantasy sports ? a league that allows you to draft entire teams to create your roster.

The concept is very simple, making it fun for college football fans of all levels. During an online, real-time draft, participants select teams to make-up their roster for the season. Each week, the participant selects teams to either start or bench. Points are given when a starting team wins.

"I can't wait for football season to start," said country star and PFU Celebrity Commissioner Darius Rucker.? Rucker, a University of South Carolina graduate and avid Gamecocks fan continued, "Watching games on Saturday is one of my favorite things to do and adding Pigskin Fantasy U to the mix is going to be awesome.? My buddies and I needed another reason to talk about football and trash talk each other," joked Rucker.

PFU resides at www.PigskinFantasyU.com, where you can start or join a league for free through October 31st, long after the season starts. When you start your own league, you set your own rules regarding the number of teams each person drafts, whether you play a head-to-head or one-vs.-all format, as well as many other options. The live, online draft feature lets friends and foes alike join together from far away places.

"It's the perfect combination ? the fantasy fun of making every game meaningful but without the nerve-wracking experience of researching a backup running back or wondering whether your guy is healthy enough to play," said Brad Miller, president and founder of recently launched PFU.

Looxcie?s Lifecasting Mobile Apps Graduate From Beta With Nifty Facebook Integration In Tow

LooxcieLive_ImageRemember Looxcie? The folks behind those tiny, ear-mounted video cameras that first popped up a few years ago? The company has been keeping to itself these past few months, mostly because the team has been slaving away some new and updated apps that they?re finally willing to talk about. The LooxcieLive mobile app has been around for a little while now ? anyone willing to brave the beta could access it as far back as last November ? but this new, non-beta version is (thankfully) leaps and bounds ahead of previous iterations. For one, it doesn?t require people to shell out extra money for a miniature camera that hangs next to their face (though the app naturally plays nice with them), so users can broadcast the process of whipping up breakfast using the camera(s) mounted on their iOS or Android devices.

Anderson Silva says he didn?t finish Thales Leites at UFC 97 out of respect

Anderson Silva's last three middleweight title defenses have ended in knockout or technical knockout in the first or second round. He has been on a tear that has cemented him as one of, if not the greatest mixed martial artist in the sport's history.

But before the recent tear and the fifth-round submission win over Chael Sonnen, Silva went through a period that can only be described as weird. In wins over Patrick Cote, Demian Maia and Thales Leites, Silva was not the dominating force we're used to seeing now.

At UFC 97, Leites was clearly outmatched, but Silva couldn't -- or wouldn't -- finish his fellow Brazilian. Three years later, Silva explained why he didn't finish the fight to Brazilian outlet Tatame.

"There's no such thing as holding back. I want to finish as soon as possible. The only time I did it was because he was a friend of mine. It was against Thales Leites. We went until the last round because he's a friend of mine and I respect him", Anderson said.

Since it was three years ago and he's been so dominant since, it's hard to hold this against Silva. However, it puts a new wrinkle in the question of teammates and friends fighting.

Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard were teammates, but their scrap at UFC 150 was one of the best 1:16-long fights I have ever watched. Neither held back out of respect, as Silva said he did against Leites.

Their fight gave ammunition to UFC president Dana White, who often gets frustrated by fighters saying they don't want to fight teammates. If teammates Cerrone and Guillard could not just fight, but knock each other silly, why not push teammates to fight?

Silva's comments say why it can still be tricky to force fighters to fight friends and teammates. His bout with Leites caused White to say, "I've never been embarrassed of a UFC fight like I was tonight." While White and the UFC can push fighters to get in the Octagon together, they cannot make them fight the way they want.

Last Hurrah of Nixon's 'New Majority'?

Looking back all the way to America's Civil War, there have been three dominant presidential coalitions.

The first was Abraham Lincoln's. With his war to restore the Union and his martyrdom, Lincoln inaugurated an era of Republican dominance that lasted more than seven decades and saw only two Democratic presidents: Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson.

The second coalition was FDR's, where he and his vice president Harry Truman won five consecutive presidential elections. Only Gen. Eisenhower could break that streak.

The third was Richard Nixon's New Majority, cobbled together after his narrow 1968 victory, where he annexed the Northern Catholic ethnics and Southern Christian conservatives of FDR's coalition to win 49 states in 1972. Ronald Reagan would follow up with 44- and 49-state landslides and see his vice president win 40 states in 1988.

That New Majority is now history. In the five elections since 1992, Republicans have won the popular vote once ? in 2004. And while Mitt Romney is slightly ahead in polls today, reaching 270 electoral votes will be no easy task. The electoral map is becoming problematic.

According to GOP Chairman Reince Priebus, the party has a 3-2-1 strategy. While holding all the states McCain won, the party must first recapture three red states that Barack Obama carried: Indiana, North Carolina and Virginia. Next, Romney must carry the two major battleground states that Obama won last time: Ohio and Florida. Third, add one more state Obama carried in 2008, like Colorado. Then the GOP is home.

Yet with the exception of Indiana, none of those six states seems close to secure. And the GOP must win them all. And now Missouri, after Todd Akin's "legitimate rape" gaffe, has moved from Republican red into the undecided column.

The good news: With Paul Ryan on the ticket, Wisconsin is in play, and Mitt's birth state, Michigan, is getting a second look.

Yet consider the uphill struggle the GOP faces in a year when the election should be a cakewalk.

Though he has four straight trillion-dollar deficits and 42 months of 8 percent unemployment to his credit, Obama appears to already have four of the seven mega-states ? California, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York ? secure and is more than competitive in Ohio and Florida.

Looking to the future, what is the Republican strategy ever again to win New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois or California, other than due to some national calamity or new depression?

Where the Democratic base seems secure, the GOP base, the South from the Potomac to the Pedernales, is seeing Democratic encroachments ? in Florida, Virginia and North Carolina.

Moreover, while the Nixon-Reagan coalition was united on the mega-issues of morality and patriotism, today's GOP is fragmenting on everything except the imperative of removing Obama.

One hears scarcely a peep of protest at Obama's withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet U.S. influence is sinking in Baghdad as a new civil war is stirring, and the Taliban's return after the U.S. departure from Afghanistan seems a certainty. Where have all the uber-hawks gone?

The caws of Sen. John McCain and the neoconservatives for intervention in Syria and an ultimatum to Tehran to halt the enrichment of uranium or face a U.S. attack is echoed by some evangelicals. But foreign policy "realists," libertarians and the anti-interventionist right, all of whom are urging us to stay out of any new war, seem more in tune with the times ? and the country.

The GOP used to be united on a traditionalist view of social and moral issues. Now, not only the Log Cabin Club, but libertarians and some moderate Republicans are receptive to the idea of homosexual marriage. And the ticket of Romney-Ryan accepts abortion in the case of incest or rape.

Once the principled position is yielded, where do we draw the line? At what point does constant accommodation cause True Believers to depart?

Priebus said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that Republicans will cut federal spending from 25 percent of gross domestic product, roughly where it is today, to 20 percent. But a cut of 5 percent of GDP translates into a budget reduction of $750 billion.

That is one-fifth of the entire U.S. budget.

While the Republicans would seek to achieve such a reduction over a period of years, such budget butchery is unheard of in modern times.

Where are the cuts to come from?

Social Security and Medicare are the largest social programs. But the beneficiaries of those middle-class entitlements are seniors and retirees, the big divisions of the Republican army. And Mitt has assured these folks he is not going to cut Medicare.

As for defense, Mitt says we need to spend more. And though the Rand Paul wing of the party is open to cuts in military spending, and some conservatives are ready to see bases closed abroad, this would cause a revolt among congressional hawks, neoconservatives, and executives and lobbyists of the military-industrial complex who show up at all those Washington fundraisers.

Mitt Romney and the Republicans have a shot at taking it all this year. But beyond, one sees only darkening skies for the Grand Old Party.

Flake wins Arizona GOP nomination for US Senate

PHOENIX (AP) ? Arizona Rep. Jeff Flake defeated wealthy businessman Wil Cardon on Tuesday in an unexpectedly feisty Republican U.S. Senate primary race marked by accusations of hypocrisy, broken promises and flip-flopping.

The six-term congressman had 70 percent of the vote in early returns. He will face Democrat Richard Carmona, who was surgeon general under President George W. Bush, in the November general election to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Jon Kyl.

One or both major parties also had primary races in all nine of Arizona's U.S. House districts, including a two-incumbent rivalry between freshman Republican Reps. Ben Quayle and David Schweikert, who were pitted against each other by redistricting. Schweikert was leading 53 percent to 47 percent in early returns.

And Rep. Ron Barber, a former aide who was hand-picked to succeed Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot in the head in a January 2011 mass shooting in Tucson, fended off a challenge by former state Rep. Matt Heinz in the Democratic primary.

Primary voters in Alaska, Oklahoma and Vermont also were deciding House races.

In Arizona, Democrats were hoping the surprisingly aggressive ? and expensive ? challenge from Cardon to Flake, who was widely seen as the favorite, will give them their best shot in years at taking one of the state's two Senate seats.

The push by Carmona comes as the GOP is fighting to pick up four more seats to wrest control of the chamber in advance of votes on key policy issues such as the possible repeal of President Barack Obama's health care law and changes to the tax code.

"This will be a great race because there are big differences between our philosophies," Flake said. "Richard Carmona is President Obama's hand-picked candidate for Arizona, and he shares the president's agenda. And I don't think it is the agenda Arizonans want."

Flake said he planned to focus on his support for repeal of Obama's health care plan and the economy.

Arizona hasn't elected a Democrat to the Senate since Dennis DeConcini won his third term in 1988, but Democrats are hoping the primary attacks on Flake have weakened his standing and his bank account.

"Jeff Flake has been a little wounded by the primary," said Jim Pederson, a former Democratic Party chairman who lost an expensive race to Kyl six years ago. "I think a lot of the issues that Wil brought up will kind of resonate with people. I think (the general election) is going to be very close."

Cardon said he believed Flake was "a better candidate because of the fights he had to go through."

Cardon spent $6 million of his own money trying to paint Flake as a Washington insider who reneged on past promises to limit his terms in office. Opponents pointed to Flake's little-known past as a Washington lobbyist for a uranium mine that was minority-owned by Iran. He also criticized Flake, saying he made a dramatic change on immigration, going from a supporter of comprehensive reform to backing policies that would first secure the border.

For his part, Cardon was accused of painting himself as tough on immigration, while a company he partly owned was fined for faulty paperwork in hiring workers with questionable legal status.

Cardon was widely seen as having begun to cede the race in the past month, turning positive in his campaign messages and ending months of expensive television ads.

"We had a good campaign," Cardon said. "Unfortunately we didn't get through to all the voters."

In Oklahoma, Westville plumbing company owner Markwayne Mullin defeated three-term state Rep. George Faught in a runoff for the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. Dan Boren. And longtime state and federal prosecutor Rob Wallace, of Fort Gibson, beat Muskogee seed company owner Wayne Herriman in the Democratic runoff.

Windsor businessman John MacGovern handily defeated a Republican primary opponent in the Vermont race to challenge independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in November.

In Alaska, five Democrats were vying for the chance to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young, who has held his seat for 40 years. Young had two challengers but was expected to easily win his primary.

Domestic airline operators in Nigeria are to raise their fares by 30% following an increase in the cost of leasing aircraft as well as higher insurance premiums by?foreign-based operators.
According to a recent report, International aircraft lessors?recently classified Nigeria among ?high-risk nations? in terms of doing business. The total cost of leasing an aircraft, like the popular Boeing 737 Classis series used by domestic airlines in Nigeria, has increased by over 60 per cent, rising from the monthly lease rental of $120,000 to $200,000.

The ?strange status? for the country is linked to the Sunday, June 3, 2012 crash involving Dana Air?s Flight 0992 in Lagos. Due to the air mishap which claimed the lives of passengers and crew members, major aircraft leasing firms such as GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), Cab Tree and Aercap have raised lease on aircraft to Nigerian airlines by over 40 per cent and with a plan to hike it to 50 per cent soon.

Prior to the Dana accident, a B737-500, which was leased for $120, 000, now attracts $200, 000 monthly. For the new generation airplanes that are in high demand and popularly referred to as Next Gen (that is aircraft below 15 years), the lease, according to airline operators, has risen to $280,000 per month from $160,000. The development is coming on the heels of a recent increase in domestic airfares by airline operators by 20 per cent, from between N23,000 and N27,000 to between N28,000 and N33,000. IRS Airlines, for instance, raised its fares from N25,000 to N30,000, while the largest domestic operator raised its fares from N27,000 to N33,000. Aerocontractors Airlines is, nevertheless, still offering fares that are a bit cheaper for passengers who book and pay online.

Some airline chiefs who are affected by the development, have lamented that coupled with the declining passenger traffic, it has become very difficult for them to cope.

The lease remained stable from 2006 to June this year following near impeccable safety recorded in the aviation industry. Added to this, is the belief in the international aviation sector that Nigerian operators lack skills in negotiating for aircraft lease; which has led to most airlines to be on the receiving end. Most local airlines are said to lack the ability to understand minimum flight hour and engine cycles for aircraft under lease. Also, the dwindling of the sector, particularly the fortunes of the carriers, has equally made lease rentals to be on the high side because the foreign firms do not trust Nigerian operators enough with their equipment.

Currently, just three airlines among the hitherto big carriers are operating. Air Nigeria was over two months ago grounded over insolvency and safety issues. Dana Air remains grounded after the tragic accident that claimed over 153 persons, while First Nation Airlines has ferried its aircraft to Europe for mandatory maintenance checks. The airline is expecting its A320 airplanes back in the country. The new high cost of lease is expected to affect the whole fiscal operations of the airlines, as they now find it difficult to buy fuel, pay workers? salaries and still have enough operating cash. When the planned increase in fares is effected, the price of a round trip ticket for a one-hour flight will increase to between 37,000 (US$231) and 42,000 Naira (US$262), from the current average of 28,000 (US$175) and 33,000 Naira (US$206).

Airlines sources, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said the only option left for the operators was to ?adjust their airfares to the prevailing costs of operation?? caused by? the upward review of the cost of leasing an aircraft by leasing and insurance companies abroad.??Although domestic airlines have yet to conclude by how much they are likely to raise their fares, sources close to the airline chiefs said the planned increase might be about 30 per cent. The increase will be the second in recent times, coming closely on the heels of a 20 per cent hike in fares by the airlines. Nigeria?s domestic airline operators have been groaning under tough operational conditions, including rising cost of fuel.

It would be recalled that Senate President David Mark had earliar accused the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA) and others of conniving with Foreign airline operators to fix high fares. Specifically, Mark described the arbitrary price charged by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic as exploitative and unreasonable. Senator Hope Uzodinma (PDP, Imo West)? with 27 others in a motion entitled: ?Violation of Aviation Laws and Practices by Foreign Airlines in Nigeria,? alleged that the conduct of the ?British Airways and Virgin Atlantic actually translates to colossal loss of revenue by the Federal Government accruable from the statutory five per cent ticket sales charge, to the magnitude of $235 million or N3.7 billion, excluding heavy financial losses by travel agencies and Nigerian travellers.?

The Senate President,? who spoke during the debate of the motion? insisted that,? ?the prices given are completely out of range. It is unreasonable; it is exploitative and nobody should tell us to sit down here and not do anything about? it because Nigerians are willing to pay. ?Our regulatory agencies have done absolutely nothing. In fact, they are part of the problem because they have been conniving with them otherwise they would have been the ones to raise the issue. They have watched helplessly; they have refused to act otherwise they should be the ones to force British Airways to look at what they are doing.? He had? noted that? the Civil Aviation Act 2006 required amendment, adding that it had not provided for reprimand of persons who flaunt aviation laws in the country.

Meanwhile, industry experts have said that the proposed increase in fares as a result of? the rise in the cost of leasing airplanes by Nigerian operators is expected.

This proposed increase, which is still being examined critically by airline operators in view of the recent adverse effect of the Dana Air crash of June 3 on the flying public, is however being slated for implementation? soon, according to sources close to the development.

Isaac casts shadow over GOP convention, campaign

(AP) ? Undaunted by Mother Nature, Republicans are set to descend on Florida as Mitt Romney's team works to cram four days of events into three after the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac forced the soon-to-be nominee to cut short his national convention.

Officials say they hope to begin laying out a revised schedule on Sunday.

As aides in Tampa scramble, Romney is taking a rare day off the campaign trail at his lakeside vacation home in New Hampshire, receiving updates on the storm and making final preparations for the Thursday speech with which he will accept his party's presidential nomination.

"The safety of those in Isaac's path is of the utmost importance," Romney tweeted after Republican officials announced they had called off Monday's convention proceedings.

Because of possible storm surges and flooding Isaac could bring, convention organizers said they were making contingency plans to move delegates who have been booked into beachfront hotels to other locations if necessary. They indicated the schedule shift also was meant to prevent overburdening emergency response personnel at the height of the storm.

The GOP made the announcement late Saturday, saying that while the convention would officially be gaveled into session on Monday as scheduled, events would be postponed until Tuesday.

With Isaac boring down on the coast, President Barack Obama, who was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, dispatched the Federal Emergency Management Agency to establish a command center and move more resources into the state. Vice President Joe Biden scrapped a planned campaign trip into Florida that was to counter the start of the GOP convention.

Republicans hope to use this week's convention to cast Romney as a determined leader with the know-how to fix the country's economy. They also want to introduce him as a family oriented figure to counter the image of him as a ruthless businessman as Democrats have sought to brand him.

Romney and his wife, Ann, looked to show off the more personal side with a joint interview airing Sunday.

"I wish everyone could see him how I see him, because as a mother, I've seen him, how compassionate he's been with me, as a wife and my raising these small children and how he always valued my work as being more important than his," Ann Romney said in the "Fox News Sunday" interview taped at the family's summer home in New Hampshire.

The candidate described his wife as his "best friend, obviously, and my counselor throughout my life," according to an advance transcript.

While the Romneys reveled in their convention, Obama was due to travel next week to college towns in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia to court young voters and college students. The president's nomination for a desired second term was to come a week later in Charlotte, N.C., during a Democratic convention beginning Sept. 4, right on the heels of the Republican convention.

In an interview with The Associated Press published Saturday, Obama sought to portray Romney as someone beholden to "extreme positions" on economic and social issues. Obama took pains to paint Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, as ideologues at a time when voters seem frustrated by government gridlock.

After a near-constant travel schedule since he was announced as the GOP vice presidential candidate, Ryan was also taking a rare break. Following a Saturday evening fundraiser in Manchester, N.H., he returned home to Janesville, Wis. Aides said Ryan planned a quiet Sunday. Then, before flying to Florida, he was to appear at a Monday rally in his hometown that was likely to offer him a hero's sendoff.

A few of Romney's former presidential rivals were holding events of their own in Tampa. Herman Cain and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann ? both have endorsed Romney ? were appearing at a joint event. Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who hasn't conferred his blessing on the presumptive nominee, was anticipating thousands at a University of South Florida rally.

Court rules Samsung didn't violate Apple's iPhone design

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co's flagship Galaxy smartphone looks very similar to Apple's iPhone, but the South Korean firm has not violated the iPhone design, a Seoul court ruled on Friday.

The South Korean ruling comes as the two technology titans are locked in a high-stakes global patent battle that mirrors a fierce rivalry for industry supremacy between two companies that control more than half the world's smartphone sales.

The Seoul court ruling on Friday comes ahead of more crucial U.S. verdicts. Nine jurors began deliberation on Wednesday in California in one of many disputes between the two firms around the world that analysts see as partly aimed at curbing the spread of Google Inc's Android, the world's most used mobile software.

"There are lots of external design similarities between the iPhone and Galaxy S, such as rounded corners and large screens ... but these similarities had been documented in previous products," a judge at the Seoul Central District Court said on Friday.

"Given that it's very limited to make big design changes in touch-screen based mobile products in general ... and the defendant (Samsung) differentiated its products with three buttons in the front and adopted different designs in camera and (on the) side, the two products have a different look," the judge said.

The judge said it was difficult to say that consumers would confuse the iPhone with the Galaxy given they clearly have the respective company logos on the back of each model, and consumers also factor in operating systems, brand, applications, price, and services when buying a phone.

The judge ordered Samsung to immediately stop selling 10 products, including the Galaxy S II, and also banned sales of four Apple products, including the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

The court ruled that Apple infringed on two of Samsung's wireless technology patents and was ordered to pay Samsung 40 million won ($35,400). Samsung was fined 25 million won for violating one patent relating to so-called bouncing-back function used when scrolling electronic documents.

The compensation sought by both Apple and Samsung in South Korea is small due to the relatively small size of the market.

The wrangle was triggered by Apple's lawsuit in April last year claiming Samsung slavishly copied Apple's smartphones and tablets. Samsung has countered that it simply developed its own "unique" products in a bid to "best the competition," and that Apple actually owes money for using its patented technology.

In the United States, Apple is demanding more than $2.5 billion in damages and an order to permanently ban Samsung from selling patent-infringing products. Samsung argues Apple owes $422 million for violating a clutch of its patents.

Neither Apple nor Samsung had an immediate comment on the Seoul ruling.

In Seoul, Samsung shares last traded down 1.3 percent, in line with the broader market.

WIN/GAT SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES WRITING COMPETITION

?Part of the group of unpublished writers that underwent writing skills training workshop at the Music Centre, Mt Pleasant.

Writers International Network Zimbabwe and its partner Global Arts Trust have successfully concluded the 2012 short story writing competition that ran from July to August 10 and the follow-up writing skills training workshop held on August 17 at the Music Centre, Harare.

Speaking before the conclusive workshop?s afternoon ceremony to award winners in the short story writing competition, Guest of Honor, Emmanuel Sigauke applauded WIN/GAT for taking up the challenge to develop new writing talent in Zimbabwe.

?Writers and poets have a fuller vision on the lives of the people around them,? Sigauke told about 37 aspiring writers who had undergone the training workshop facilitated by renowned writer Memory Chirere.

Chirere had taken the aspiring writers on a journey of short story writing the whole morning until 1pm. The training had proved enlightening as it took the unpublished writers by surprise and made them realize things they never had thought or imagined about short story writing.

Guest of Honor Sigauke, who is also WIN Board member, spoke on the importance and joy of writing, urging the new writers to read as widely as they can to sharpen their writing skills.

?There are three types of reading. There is reading as a writer, then reading for pleasure and lastly reading for exams,? he said.

Although he conceded that writing is a long journey, he said it is a very rewarding adventure.

Turning to the short story writing competition which had preceded the workshop, Sigauke told the new writers how lucky they were to be exposed to free writing competitions.

?In Africa, Zimbabwe in particular, the writing competitions hardly charge an entry fee. In the USA, there are lots of these writing contests but charging not less than $15 as entry fee,? said Sigauke.

Although he left Zimbabwe in 1996 for the USA to pursue further studies, Sigauke said he had not lost touch with literary events happening in his home country.

He said, via the internet, he has been exposed to Zimbabwean literature and has been an active player in its field.

He urged aspiring writers to get involved with online platforms and journals such as Mazwi, the WIN blog, Memory Chirere?s blog, Chisiya Echoes, Mototi, Kwani (Kenya), Chimurenga (S Africa), and the African Roar short story annual anthology.

The Munyori Literary Journal which Sigauke established has featured various Zimbabwean writers and poets. The Munyori Journal, said Sigauke, is now registered with the US Congress of Libraries, a move that will see the journal?s readership escalating internationally.

As an editor, Sigauke said he understood how agonizing a rejection slip is to a starting writer but said starting writers at times should experience rejection so that they are motivated to write better.

?You cannot be rejected where you did not write,? said Sigauke who was visibly happy to see students from Glen View 2 High, a school at which he once taught.

Sigauke said he is an advocate for teaching creative writing. ?Can writing be taught? Yes. It helps you find a craft form for what you want to write,? he said. In the USA, Sigauke teaches creative writing at Cosumnes River College.

Flashing back to his days when he was a budding writer, Sigauke said the then Budding Writers Association of Zimbabwe (BWAZ), of which he was the founding member, launched him on a road of writing and he hasn?t and will not give up writing.

Winners Scoop Book Prizes

Lung-cracking comedians Toropito and his friend Thompson General warmed the workshop participants with exciting comedy and drama a few minutes before the next segment which included announcement of winners, book prize-giving and speeches.

Before the announcement, some participants could be heard heaving long-drawn sighs of expectation as the list of winners was handed over to the Director of Ceremony, Monica Cheru. As there was no age-limit to the competition, a mixed-bag of winners came up.

Although the Certificates of Participation were there, they could not be presented due to forces beyond WIN?s control. However, some participants have since collected theirs from the WIN office.

Guest of Honor Sigauke, flanked by the facilitator, Memory Chirere, GAT representative poet Tinashe Muchuri, Glen View 2 High and Bilaal Academy writers? clubs patrons, presented the prizes to winners.

First prize in the Shona language category went to Ali Simbi, whose short story Kukurukura Hungwe Wapotswa scored highest with 70 marks out of 100. The adjudicator?s comment described Simbi?s story as ?a very touching episodic short story?. Supa Mafuta from Epworth, scooped second prize with his story titled Kuyambutsa Datya which scored 60 marks out of 100. The third prize was won by Glen View 2 High student Evelyn Chiradza for her story titled Zuva Randisingakanganwi which scored 50 marks out of 100.

A consolation/4th prize was given to Justice Gondoto for his story Rwendo Nebhazi.

In the English category, Karen Maturure of Gwebi College scored highest marks, scooping the first prize with her story Pandemonium. Pandemonium scored 69 marks out of 100. Bilaal Islamic Academy of Epworth carried home two prizes in this category with students Panashe Banda scooping second prize and Anna Makore co-winning the third prize (with Mt Pleasant student Portfer Gwengweni). Panashe Banda?s short story Wife Used Husband to Carry Letter to Boyfriend, scoring 67 marks out of 100, was described by the adjudicator as an excellent story. A consolation or 4th prize was presented to Freedom Gengezha for his story titled Rising above the Mediocre.

A surprise category, Special Junior Writer Prize,? meant to encourage primary school pupils to have a passion for reading and writing went to Panashe Mushambi from Nettleton Primary School (Harare) Mushambi?s short story titled David, the brave Young Man, scored 52 marks out of 100 and was described by adjudicator as ?fairly good and folkloric?.

The above stories won book prizes which included the Write Idea, Writer?s Choice ?language books donated by Zimbabwe Reads and copies of some books such as In The Night by Richard Spilman, SPC Tule Review (2011 & 2012), Consumes River Journal (2012), donated by Sigauke and general books donated by Weaver Press.

Glen View 2 High and Bilaal Academy Writers? Clubs received ten Write Idea books each.

Soon after the book prize giving ceremony, Tinashe Muchuri, speaking on behalf of Global Arts Trust, emphasized how much the late Walter L Muparutsa loved to promote aspiring artists in Epworth via WIN Epworth Community Outreach Programme. In his speech Muchuri also reiterated how the partnership between WIN and Global Arts Trust is strategic. He pointed out that the idea was that since some WIN members produce scripts it would be beneficial for them as Global Arts Trust has the acumen to develop the scripts for the stage since the latter are into theatre and film as well.

Afterwards, WIN director Beaven Tapureta gave a heartfelt speech. He said the combined competition & workshop was the first of its kind for WIN and promised this shall become annual.

He explained that the next activities, ceteris paribus, would be a short story anthology, and a poetry anthology that embraces English, Shona and Ndebele languages. Tapureta also reminded the new writers about the third edition of the Writers? End of Year Get Together that will take place in December this year.?

Later Ms. Grace Chapfiwa, a self published Christian author of the book, Seasons of Purpose, made the vote of thanks before she closed the day with the Lord?s prayer.

The combined Short Story Writing Competition & Writing Skills Training Workshop was organized by WIN in partnership with Global Arts Trust, supported by Zimbabwe Reads, an organization that promotes reading culture in Zimbabwe through book donations to libraries, organizations and schools. The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (Harare Provincial Office) also supported the WIN/GAT event by unveiling the wonderful venue for free.?

The End?
