22 Social Marketing Tips Your "Social Media Expert" Won't Tell You

Create customer loyalty to increase sales.

?Social media experts? are great at ?connecting? and ?joining the conversation?.

But they?re terrible at marketing.

You know, the kind of marketing that actually matters. Like generating leads, increasing sales, improving customer retention, and growing your business.

Social media isn?t an isolated ?thing?. It should help you accomplish all of these goals. But if you follow their advice, then you?ll have an ?active? Twitter account and little else to show for it.

Here are 22 social marketing tips you can use to help grow your business.

Start Right

  1. Start with a Goal: Why are you blogging? What are you doing on Twitter? There are only three acceptable answers: (a) increase brand awareness by growing your reach, (b) build customer loyalty by providing more support, or (c) increase sales by getting more people to purchase, more frequently. Don?t even start unless you can answer this question.
  2. Ignore Your Competition: Trying to benchmark other people?s Fans and Followers is a fools game. You?ll start making bad decisions because you?re trying to ?keep up?. And when you make bad short-term choices, your long-term success will suffer. The best tactical ideas and campaigns haven?t happened in your industry yet. So use arbitrage marketing to figure out what new, untapped opportunities you can seize and gain an early lead. Look at what people are doing in other industries and try to experiment with similar tactics.
  3. Don?t Be on Every Social Network: Community management will deplete all of your resources. Each social network you manage will cost you exponentially more time, money and energy. And contrary to popular belief, social media isn?t free. It takes tremendous resources to do it properly, and has an enormous opportunity cost. So prioritize one or two networks to see the biggest growth.

    Don?t Make Excuses

  4. You Do Have Enough Time and Money: People always claim that they don?t have time or money to invest in social media. But the truth of the matter is that you can?t afford not to. If you?re short on time, then hire a virtual assistance and outsource your lowest level tasks. Or invest in resources that will speed up your learning curve. If you?re short on money, then you should have more time to spend on content creation or networking. Set an easy, actionable goal like 2 extra posts each week, or reach out to one blogger a day. And do an informal audit of how you currently spend your time. You?ll be amazed at the time wasted and the opportunity cost your time could be worth.
  5. Being Efficient Doesn?t Mean You?re Being Effective: Social media is wonderful, but people confuse busyness with effectiveness. Start with a goal, reverse engineer how you?re going to reach that goal, identify your highest ROI activities, prioritize and set boundaries, be disciplined and accountable to others.
  6. Have Relentless Focus: When you?ve identified one main business goal, every online strategy and tactic will need to support it to get the highest ROI. And sooner or later, you?ll have to make a tough decision. You?ll need to divide your limited resources and choose what you?re going to do (and what you?re going to ignore). But you?ll see that this decision is easy when you have a goal. Your social media use will now have a purpose. And you?ll find that you do have enough time for it?s strategic use.

    Set Yourself Up for Success

  7. Be a Publisher First: Online marketing can?t exist without content. No SEO. No email marketing. No social media. That means you?re in the media business. So you better start learning how to create valuable content. Check out Red Bull, American Express and Lowe?s.
  8. Understand What Motivates Your Audience: ?Industries? or ?businesses? aren?t boring ? the people who say that are. Nobody cares about your business (or mine!). People only care about themselves (including you and me!). The way you come up with blog content ideas is to understand your audience, and the benefit your products or services give them.
  9. Don?t Overemphasize Tactics: Oprah isn?t good at social media because she?s a Twitter guru or Pinterest expert. She understands (a) what her audience wants, and (b) uses these new tools to create a repoire to get them to trust her more and stick around longer. Once you?ve identified the goal you?re trying to reach, then you need to create marketing objectives and a strategy that will deliver on these promises. Tactics help you accomplish a strategy. But they can?t increase revenue or decrease costs on their own.
  10. Crown a Dictator in your Organization: Bureaucracies and politics kill action. Even getting someone to make a decision can take weeks. But be careful of HIPPOs ? where the highest paid person?s opinion reigns supreme. Instead, companies need to find champions with a history of success, and who prefer data-driven decisions over political ones.

    Be Unconventional

  11. Be Lazy: Connecting one-to-one is great. But it doesn?t scale. Instead, you should be lazy and make people come to you. Create content, provide expertise, or use money to put yourself in front of communities of people ? and give them the chance to find you.
  12. Do Less: Spreading yourself too thin will give you average results. If you want to grow, then get good at creating content (or hire someone to do it). Then contribute articles to top media properties in your industry, or speak in front of organizations (for free!). You?ll get real business leads (first), and build a social media following (second). All with one investment of your time and money. Exactly the way it should be.
  13. Ignore Trends: Trends are like waves in the ocean, they come and they go. Pinterest might work for some businesses. But for others, it?s a waste of time. It has the (a) wrong kind of traffic, (b) not enough users, and a (c) demographic mismatch. Instead, focus and invest in the fundamentals ? like your blog and email marketing.

    Be Original

  14. Have a Voice: People don?t want to connect with faceless corporations. They want to connect with real humans. But a lot of companies still don?t understand this. No one will like, trust or respect your company in the long run if they can?t get straight, honest feedback in a timely manner.
  15. Take a Stand: In his TED talk, Simon Sinek said, ?People don?t buy what you do, they buy why you do it?. Think about the special companies that you like and admire. They start with ?Why?. They tap into a bigger cause than themselves, and that emotionally connects with people. If you only sell ?What? you do, then you?re going to be stuck selling commodities and you?ll always compete on price.
  16. Declare an Enemy: If you?re going to have a voice and take a stand for something, then by default there has to be examples of people, trends, business philosophies or companies you don?t agree with. Again, you?re not marketing to everyone. You want to attract those who share your worldview. And one of the best ways to get people to commit and emotionally engaged is through sharing a common bond, or defending yourselves against the same threat.

    Measure the Right Things

  17. Twitter Followers -> Email Subscribers: Twitter is a great communication channel. It helps you contact and stay in touch with anyone you want. But it doesn?t directly make you real money. Email marketing is still the most profitable online marketing channel.
  18. Facebook Fans -> People Talking About This: Facebook?s EdgeRank was designed to keep companies from spamming their ?fans?. So it only allows you to reach the fans that actively engage with your brand. ?People Talking About This? is the closest metric you have to increase your ?viral reach?. The higher that number goes, the better chance you have of reaching more people. And the bigger your page will grow because you?ll start reaching more ?friends of fans?.
  19. Forget about Blog Comments: The 1% rule of the internet is a general rule of thumb that says most people (90%) will consume content, while very few will interact (9%) or create it (1%). This is even more lopsided when you look across different industries. People in these warm and fuzzy industries are extremely active in creating content, and will leave more comments than the rest of the world. So the type of person each industry caters to says more than the actual, real engagement.
  20. Klout -> Net Promoter Score: Klout is like the stereotypical pretty girl in high school, she looks good on the outside but lacks substance on the inside. Do you really want to know how satisfied customers and fans are? Then ask them to take the Net Promoter Score. It?s one simple question that will only take a few seconds, and it?s vastly more accurate than Klout.

?How likely are you to recommend to a colleague or friend??
Your Net Promoter Score equals the percentage of Promoters (9s and 10s) minus the percentage of Detractors (0 through 6) (7s and 8s are ?Passives?, and are left out).

    Have Perspective

  21. Have Realistic Expectations: People are too impatient. You can?t throw a Hail Mary pass in the last minute of the game and expect to win every time. Marketing and sales only work if people trust you. And that process takes time. In the simplest terms possible, there are two ways to market online: (a) use advertising to ?rent? attention, or (b) use inbound marketing to ?earn? attention. But both are going to cost you something. If you don?t have the time or energy, then you need to spend money on advertising. If you don?t have money to invest, then you need to spend time and energy in creating content, building relationships, and learning how to get people to find you.
  22. Go Beyond Facebook and Twitter: Social media (and internet marketing) at larger companies is easy. Extremely easy. It?s easy to build Twitter Followers and get people to engage with you when your company has been around for decades. But it?s extremely difficult to transcend those networks and get the whole organization aligned with how your consumers shop today. Social media success transcends your Facebook page or latest Twitter promotion. It?s a new way of doing business and it starts with your DNA, your product or service, and your people. So if you want to improve your social media presence, then start on the inside of your organization first.

Conclusion

Social media is much more than ?engaging in the conversation?.

It?s a new way of doing things, and a new set of tools to help you do it. But the same marketing fundamentals apply.

You need to gain attention, build trust, and keep people engaged longer.

Because in addition to growing your ?social media presence?, you?ll also be able to get more traffic, bring in more leads and create more happy customers.

Credit funds get boost from JP Morgan loss: survey

JPMorgan Chase & Co's international headquarters are seen on Park Avenue in New York

LONDON (Reuters) - The type of hedge funds that bet against JP Morgan and made money from its $5.8 billion "London Whale" trading loss has risen to the top of investors' buying lists for the coming quarter, a survey showed.

Of 157 investors polled across the globe, 53 percent said they planned to allocate cash to credit relative value funds in the coming quarter, according to Credit Suisse's mid-year Hedge Fund Investor Survey.

This hedge fund strategy seeks to profit from dislocations in fixed income markets, and many have performed well this year after taking advantage of the U.S. bank's losing position in credit derivatives.

Robert Leonard, global head of Capital Services at Credit Suisse, said news of the funds' gains from the JP Morgan loss probably boosted the appeal of the strategy. Investors are also demanding trading styles that are less exposed to the economic headwinds causing havoc elsewhere.

"Investors have got plenty of volatility in their book right now. They are looking for strategies that are less volatile, and I think credit is one of those," he told Reuters.

The credit relative value fund strategy was the fifth most popular when Credit Suisse conducted an earlier survey, before JP Morgan's loss came to light.

By comparison, 50 percent of the investors said they planned to increase their allocation to global macro funds, which were the most sought type of fund at the start of the year, the survey showed.

In May, JP Morgan reported a $2 billion trading loss, which then swelled to $5.8 billion, after the bank's Chief Investment Office made bets now known as "the London Whale trades" on derivatives linked to corporate debt.

The loss proved an embarrassment for the bank and led to criticism of boss Jamie Dimon. The outsized bets also distorted the price of certain credit derivatives and offered shrewd hedge funds a chance to profit when the bank was eventually forced to sell.

According to Hedge Fund Research, the HFRI Relative Value (Total) Index was up 4.18 percent to mid-July, more than double the 1.87 percent average hedge fund gain.

Some individual credit relative value funds have performed even better.

BlueMountain, the firm co-founded by Andrew Feldstein, has seen its Credit Alternatives Fund rise by more than 10 percent by mid-July, while Brevan Howard's Credit Catalysts Fund was up more than 7 percent, private investor data shows.

Some funds such as Boaz Weinstein's Saba Capital have since exited their bets against JP Morgan, but other managers still remain confident dislocations elsewhere in credit markets will offer new opportunities, fund sources said.

Meanwhile, the results of the Credit Suisse survey may worry managers of equity long-short funds.

Yet to rebound from a poor 2011, the strategy is set to suffer the most withdrawals in the coming quarter as 26 percent of investors indicated that they planned to cut exposure.

"The good news is we haven't see a big exodus from the space ... But I do think in the second half of the year, that is going to be a different story. It's going to be a time when a lot of investors draw conclusions based on how their managers perform," Leonard said.

More than four-fifths of investors polled expect to make allocations to hedge funds in the coming quarter, and 63 percent indicated that they had made allocations in the past quarter, the survey found.

Patent suit may decide smartphone's future

Files / AFP - Getty Images

This combination of file photos shows the Samsung Galaxy tablet(L) and the Apple iPad. Jury selection was set to open July 30, 2012 in a U.S. federal court in the blockbuster patent case pitting Apple against Samsung.

By Martha C. White, NBC News contributor

(Updated 3:23 p.m. Eastern) While patent law doesn?t have a reputation for being scintillating stuff, the lawsuit between Apple and Samsung is the exception. How the case is decided could have a potentially serious impact on nearly every American who uses a smartphone.
?
Apple contends that the Korean manufacturer ripped off the iPhone?s look and feel. "It's the cool factor, and they feel like Samsung took that," said?Joseph A. Mandour, managing partner of Mandour & Associates. The company is?seeking $2.5 billion in damages and permanent injunctions against sales. Legal experts say the case and its inevitable appeals will probably drag on for years. Neither side seems inclined to settle because there isn't a clear-cut prediction for the outcome, especially because the case is being tried before a jury.

A partial or complete victory by Apple could, in the most extreme case, lead to a ban on sales. "(If)?there?s some sort of an injunction, that becomes a loss for the consumer market in general," said? Will Stofega, mobile devices analyst at International Data Corporation.

Analysts say it's more likely that an Apple victory would force changes to the way Samsung?s phones and tablets look and function. "Samsung's probably got a work-around," said?Kevin G. Rivette, patent expert and managing partner at 3LP.?In Germany, for instance, Samsung added a slim frame around the front of a contested Galaxy tablet to get around Apple?s contention that a wholly glass front was its invention.?Small tweaks might be enough to bring Samsung within the letter of the law here, too.

On the other hand, "If Apple wins on some of the really fundamental technologies... consumers will notice," said Polk Wagner, professor at University of Pennsylvania Law School. "Dragging, scrolling -- what we now think of as completely normal --?these are some of the fairly fundamental ideas of how someone interacts with these new devices."

Related story: Billions at stake as Apple, Samsung face off in court

"At the heart of this lawsuit is this same issue, which is: How do I differentiate my product from the other guy?s in a market that seems to be rapidly moving?" said Stephen Baker,?consumer technology analyst at NPD Group. "Each company wants you to be comfortable within their ecosystem."?

Samsung already scrapped a local search feature in some Galaxy phones and tablets in response to patent issues. Patent experts say it?s possible that a decision could force?Samsung to take away other features or make them radically different, which is a disconcerting prospect for users who have grown used to that interface's look and feel.

Mandour?said Apple has stronger grounds to argue that it has been damaged because of lookalike design elements on Samsung devices rather than the alleged co-opting of functions; consumers are more likely to make a purchase decision based on how the phone looks than whether scrolling past a screen will create a ?bounce? effect.

If Samsung is entitled to damages from Apple, Rivette said the price of iPhones could be impacted??marginally,? ?although the company might decide against passing along that cost to consumers, given the profits it earns on the iPhone. "You?re looking at margins that are so huge that if you want to keep market share, you just eat it," he said.

Over the course of litigation, Apple might seek a temporary injunction to block sales of some Samsung devices, a tactic in which it has had some success in the past.?This would frustrate consumers who wanted to buy the phone or tablet, but it could turn out to be a boon for Apple; the tech giant is coming off a rare lackluster quarter, and it predicted that this quarter also will be only fair as customers hold back and wait for the new iPhone.

"I think what you're really looking at here is if Apple can get an injunction, even temporarily for a couple months, then you?re into the Christmas quarter," Mandour said. "Apple needs a good quarter," and having its main competitor knocked out of the running could certainly help achieve that.?

Small Business Majority breaks away from the pack | The Salt Lake ...

When John Arensmeyer owned a high-tech company, he didn?t feel that the organizations that lobbied on behalf of small business really represented him ? or many other business owners.

"They put forth a monolithic view of what small business wants," says Arensmeyer. "I felt they were overly partisan and overly ideological and didn?t really look pragmatically at what small businesses need. So I felt there was an opportunity and a need for a new voice."

In 2005, Arensmeyer founded Small Business Majority, a group that now has 8,000 business people nationwide in its network. Like other lobbying groups, Small Business Majority takes positions on issues including tax and regulation. But it doesn?t follow the pack. Arensmeyer?s group supported President Barack Obama?s overhaul of the health care system ? a stark contrast to the National Federation of Independent Business, which unsuccessfully argued against the law before the Supreme Court.

"Policy makers need to listen to different voices because there are a variety of small businesses out there," Arensmeyer says. "One of the things we?re trying to do is be somewhat of an aggregator of some of those voices."

Arensmeyer, now based in California, began his working life as a commercial and corporate law attorney in New York, where he was born. He served as chief operating officer of SoftAd Group, a developer of multimedia marketing products, and then founded ACI Interactive, an e-commerce company. He started Small Business Majority after selling his company.

Arensmeyer spoke recently with The Associated Press. Here are excerpts, edited for clarity and brevity:

Q. How is Small Business Majority different from other small business groups?

A. Most small business owners are pragmatic, the vast majority. Some are ideological on the right, some are ideological on the left. The fact is, most small business owners, as I did when I ran my business, get up in the morning and worry about payroll, worry about putting out a good product, worry about their customers, worry about all the bumps in the road. I felt that on many issues, the business organizations took very ideological, sort of blanket positions. For instance, all government is bad, or all government regulation is bad. That?s not the way most small business owners think. Most small business owners welcome government involvement sometimes, recognize a role for government sometimes, and sometimes they think government has gone too far. You really need to look at things on an issue by issue basis. Whether the issue was taxes or regulations, just to blanketly say all taxes are bad or all regulations are bad, I didn?t think that was an appropriate way to look at the world. I think it has hindered the ability of those organizations to really work constructively with policymakers on both sides of the aisle to forge solutions.

Q. When you say that small business owners don?t take blanket positions, how do you know that?

A. We?ve done extensive polling over the last five, six, seven years. When I started the business, it was a feeling I had but it?s been validated by polling.

story continues below

Q. What did you see in the health care law that made you support it?

A. The starting point is that the existing system is completely broken, so it?s hard to imagine anything worse than the status quo. That?s an important starting point because you have to be open to look at a variety of different solutions. We know that cost is the biggest consideration for small businesses. And so we were obviously looking for ways that the law could bring down costs, whether it was something specific for small businesses like tax credits, or the health insurance exchanges, which will enable small businesses to have the same kind of bargaining power as big businesses and offer their employees the same level of choice.

Small businesses pay 18 percent more than big businesses for the same coverage. The exchanges should get pretty close to leveling that because you spread the administrative costs and you provide small businesses with the same negotiating power as big businesses. That?s cost containment. Obviously, getting everyone into this system, the so-called individual responsibility provision, that?s a cost containment provision ? because right now, we?re all paying for people who are using the system and not contributing to it. The provisions in the law that put some kind of control over what the insurance companies can charge versus what they?re actually paying for medical care. All of these pieces as the Affordable Care Act began to be debated were important and we thought collectively, they were a huge step in the right direction. ..

All in all, we didn?t see any downside. The employer responsibility provision (that requires businesses with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance) is so narrow it only affects 4 percent of all businesses, and of the 4 percent, the vast majority are already offering coverage. You have a very narrow swath of people who were affected by that.

Is it as perfect as it should be? Of course not, but it?s such a staggeringly large improvement over the status quo. That?s why we did support the law. What we need to do now is get it implemented, figure out what?s working and what?s not. Again it?s all about pragmatically looking at the facts. If there?s a portion of this law that isn?t working in two or three years, we should all be ready to stand up and say, it?s not working, let?s fix it.

Q. What is another issue that Small Business Majority has a different stand on?

A. Another example is clean energy. Clean energy is a huge economic engine for this country, for big and small businesses, and yet the policies that certain groups push seem to be supported only by traditional fossil fuel companies ? not even all big businesses, much less any small businesses. So again, it was an example of groups stating a business position, calling it good for small business, and really only reflecting a narrow segment of the big business community.

Maybe NBA players competing at Olympics isn?t a good idea

Story Image

LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 29: Lebron James #6 of United States walks in front of his team durign a break in play against France during their Men's Basketball Game on Day 2 of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Basketball Arena on July 29, 2012 in London, England. LONDON ? Here at the Basketball Pavilion, as the U.S. men?s team beats up on France, two questions come to mind:

How about that funky ball?

And, why are all these NBA guys playing?

Well, the ball is actually quite nice, in my opinion ? a yellow and orange leather orb that looks a bit like a new Gucci handbag. When it spins, it resembles a rotating cheese potato.

But the NBA guys ? for both the USA and France ? I don?t know about that.

The Americans toyed with the French men, casually beating them to a pulp, 98-71. The event was more like a McDonald?s All Star game than true competition.

With America?s Russell Westbrook running crazily up and down the floor and Chris Paul trying a three-part air-dribble that even the Globetrotters wouldn?t allow, I have to wonder if it?s a good thing to have these multi-millionaires playing for something other than dollars.

It?s not like they?re overtly not trying. Carmelo Anthony ended up in a photographer?s lap chasing a loose ball in the first half. And old Kobe Bryant had his poker face on.

But Kevin Durant dribbled so much in one series that he ended up sliding to the floor, self-checking himself to death.

Wouldn?t young players who have been together as a U.S. team for months and months be better than these quasi-All Star Games? Other than Tony Parker, the French team had no one of the U.S. players? skill set. But France?s Florent Pietrus, Ronny Turiaf, Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum, and Kevin Seraphim are all NBA players, as well. Just not stars.

Yes, the Olympics used to be played with, quote, amateurs ? even if the Soviets and other Eastern Bloc players were often old, true, pros ? and it?s virtually impossible to determine the boundaries of ?amateurism.?

But playing with young men ? nobody older than, say, 22 ? might be a more enjoyable Olympic treat. Age group, that?s all.

We have the NBA Championships, the World Championships, and other championships.

Make this different. Like with Kobe Bryant?s kids.

Apple Talking About Investing In Twitter [Report] | Cult of Mac

Apple Talking About Investing In Twitter [Report]

These do look pretty cool together.

Ping never had a chance, the way it was tied into Apple iTunes, but a recent report may show the way to Apple?s eventual success in the social media space. According to a report in the New York Times, ?people briefed on the matter? say that Apple has been talking with the social media startup about making a strategic investment.

The numbers bandied about include an Apple investment stake of hundreds of millions of dollars, which might then in turn increase Twitter?s already high valuation of around $8.4 billion to a nicer-looking $10 billion.

While Apple and Twitter are not currently in negotiations, a stronger financial partnership would make a lot of sense, especially as Twitter continues to integrate more strongly with each iteration of Apple?s iOS mobile software, as well as a stronger integration on the Mac desktop with Mac OS X Mountain LIon. Facebook debuts as a more integrated service in upcoming iOS 6, but the relationship between the house of Zuck and the house of Jobs is tenuous at best, ever since the two companies were unable to make a deal to include Facebook features within Ping. Google, of course, is pushing it?s own social media presence, with Google Plus, and ? oh yeah ? also competes quite directly with Apple via the Android mobile operating system.

Investing in social media superstar Twitter would be a different approach for the typically buy-em-and-subsume-em Apple, but it would definitely raise Apples social media street-cred. Twitter?s growth into the market has been unparalleled, gaining more than 140 million monthly active users (MAUs) in a very short time. Twitter would benefit from the above-mentioned boost in valuation, a first for the social media business, as Facebook?s weak debut on the financial market still casts a pall over the web company. Twitter doesn?t need the money, per se, with a reported $600 million in cash and $1 billion in financing it?s garnered from investors and advertising.

It would be fantastic if these two companies connect, though, as Apple really doesn?t seem to ?get? social media, and Twitter isn?t bound to compete with Apple in any obvious way. A partnership, even a limited one via an investment strategy, makes sense.

Friends defend man held in Md. shooting plot

WASHINGTON (AP) ? To his friends, Neil E. Prescott was a "gentle giant" ? a physically towering young man with a background in computers and electronics and a sarcastic, even biting, sense of humor that people close to him knew to shrug off as innocuous.

But police say they had no choice but to take it seriously when Prescott threatened to shoot up his workplace and referred to himself as "a joker," comments that raised particular alarm in the wake of last week's mass shooting at a Colorado theater during the latest Batman movie. The man accused in those shootings dyed his hair reddish-orange, and New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said the man called himself the Joker ? a reference to Batman's nemesis.

Prescott, 28, was taken into custody early Friday at his apartment in Maryland, where officers found several thousand rounds of ammunition and a cache of about two dozen weapons including semi-automatic rifles and pistols. He was receiving an emergency psychiatric evaluation at a hospital and had not been charged as of Saturday afternoon.

Two friends told The Associated Press Saturday that they couldn't imagine that Prescott, who was in the process of being fired or already had lost his job, intended to be taken seriously when he allegedly told a supervisor: "I'm a joker and I'm gonna load my guns and blow everybody up."

"Neil's the kind of guy who had the ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time and not mean anything by it. So to him, he thinks it's funny," said Wesley Weber, who said his friend, at 6 feet 7 inches, was a "gentle giant" prone to bouts of exaggeration and inappropriate jokes who "talked big but didn't walk the walk."

"He has the ability," Weber added, "to say things that could be taken out of context."

Another friend, Mike Cochran, said Prescott has a history of wearing T-shirts with sarcastic, provocative and even inflammatory messages and is "no stranger to sarcasm regardless of political correctness." When first approached by officers, police say, Prescott was wearing a shirt that said "Guns don't kill people. I do."

"The Neil I know made those comments sarcastically in an environment where he felt he could make them without being taken seriously," Cochran said in an email.

Friends say that over the years, Prescott had shown deep interest in hobbies like such as computer software, electronics and ham radio. His clique of friends at one time gathered at parties to play multi-player video games and consume the highly caffeinated Jolt cola, Weber recalled. A sometime disc jockey, he'd also spin house music at Baltimore nightclubs and was the DJ for Cochran's bachelor party in 2005.

In recent years, though, he'd cultivated a passion for collecting firearms. He'd practice his shot at the training range, friends said, and communicate online with fellow gun enthusiasts about the ins and outs of firearm equipment and gun laws. At least some of the firearms recovered from his apartment in Crofton, near Annapolis, appear to have been legally owned, authorities said.

A search for Neil Prescott on a website that tracks users' online activities led to a profile that appears to be him on mdshooters.com, a website for Maryland gun hobbyists. On it, he trades advice about firearms with a display of technical know-how while at times expressing concern about break-ins near his apartment and detailing interactions with the police.

Cochran, who also posts on the site, said he doesn't know when Prescott started his gun collection but that he had been anxious about home invasions. He said he received one message from Prescott last November that said, "Might be sleeping in tomorrow, just had a suspicious male at my door. Notified PD but am gonna be lookin out tonight. Some crazy breakins near me recently."

In March, he provoked a spirited back-and-forth on the site when he complained that two police officers responding to a possible break-in at a nearby apartment "told me never to answer the door on my own property carrying." He said he called a sergeant to complain about the directive.

Last week, he was still on the site, talking with fellow users about 30-round magazines and boasting about his night-vision goggles.

"During the power outage i spent lots of time loading mags and mounting lights, when the zombie apocalypse comes i'll be ready," he wrote.

Maryland state court records for Prescott list only a speeding ticket in 2007. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

Police say Prescott, an employee of a subcontractor for software and mailroom supplier Pitney Bowes, made the threats during two Monday morning phone conversations with a supervisor. The supervisor, who declined to comment Saturday to a reporter who came to his house, said the comments made him afraid, especially because he was aware of Prescott's weapons' cache.

Prescott at one point said he wished to see his supervisor's "brain splatter all over the sidewalk," but also acknowledged that he shouldn't be saying such things over the phone, according to a search warrant applications. The threats were reported to the police, who paid an initial visit to Prescott's apartment on Thursday before taking him into custody Friday morning.

Cochran said he's known Prescott since 2001, when they were colleagues at a technical support outsourcing company. He said Prescott was a network engineer.

"With his skill set and education he would have had no problems finding other work with good pay. Neil did not at any point indicate to me that he had problems with where he was working," Cochran wrote.

Pitney Bowes spokeswoman Carol Wallace said Prescott had not been on any company property in at least four months. It wasn't clear why he was losing his job.

Weber said he thought the remark was inappropriate, but that it was bound to receive more attention now than it may have years ago, especially one week after the Colorado shooting.

"We live in a different world now," he said.

Panasonic TC-L42ET5

Passive 3D is a convenient, inexpensive way to watch 3D movies on an HDTV. While active 3D often offers the better picture, passive 3D doesn't require expensive, battery-powered glasses. Each 3D technology comes with?trade-offs. The majority of the sets Panasonic sells are active 3D, but the company is joining Vizio and LG in the ranks of manufacturers offering passive 3D models. The ET5 series is the company's first passive 3D LED model, and at $1,099.99 (direct) for the 42-inch TC-L42ET5 version we tested, it's an affordable HDTV. But its picture quality doesn't measure up to Vizio's or LG's passive 3D screens, and doesn't come close to matching active 3D HDTVs. Still, the set's price and feature set helps make up for its picture failings, and if you want an affordable HDTV that does a lot, it's a solid choice.

Design
Very basic looking, the set's bezel is flat and plain, framed by clear acrylic edging to give it a little bit of flair. The base is black, rectangular, and sturdy, but doesn't turn or pivot in any direction. Power, Volume Up/Down, Channel Up/Down, and Menu buttons sit tucked just behind the right edge of the screen. On the opposite side, four HDMI inputs and two USB ports sit conveniently facing to the left. The remaining component and composite video (a pair of connectors that use an adapter), VGA, cable, Ethernet, and optical audio ports face down from a recessed portion of the back panel.

Panasonic TC-L42ET5 Remote

The 8.9-inch remote is large, backlit, and comfortable. The big buttons are easily identifiable, and the number pad, volume/channel controls, and navigation pad all feel different enough under your thumb that you can easily use the remote blindly. A dedicated Internet button accesses Viera Connect services and a 3D button summons 3D options, but the remote doesn't have dedicated Netflix or Skype buttons like Panasonic's connected Blu-ray players like the DMP-BDT220 ($114.99, 4 stars). Panasonic also offers a smartphone app that turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a remote control. It also has touchpad and gamepad modes for browsing the Web and playing games on Viera Connect apps on the HDTV.

You can use built-in Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection to hook up the TV to the Internet and Panasonic's Viera Connect service. It comes with several apps and online services installed, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, and a Web browser. Web browsing is awkward with the remote, but you can use Panasonic's Viera Remote app to turn your iPhone or Android smartphone into a touchpad for better cursor control. You can download additional apps and services to the HDTV through the Viera Connect Market, which also lets you order physical products like optional gamepads and Webcams for use with certain apps.

Performance
We test HDTVs with DisplayMate test patterns, a Konica-Minolta CS-200 ChromaMeter, and Spectracal's CalMAN software. After?setting the color temperature to Warm and performing a?basic brightness and contrast calibration, the L42ET5 reached a peak brightness of 292.50 cd/m2?and a peak black level of 0.03 cd/m2, for an effective contrast ratio of 9,750:1. Colors were very accurate, with greens registering as just slightly warm. The chart below shows the screen's values compared with the CIE standards, represented respectively by the colored dots and boxes.

Despite good numbers, the L42ET5's picture has some quirks. Off-axis viewing distorts color, causing the picture to look pale and indistinct if you look at it from any view wider than about 45 degrees from the center. While the HDTV has a dark enhancement mode, we recommend turning it off and setting black levels to "light," because the mode severely clips shadow detail and makes very dark objects disappear. It showed no noticeable clipping in highlights, though.

I watched Piranha on Blu-ray on the L42ET5, and the picture was bright and colorful. The sunny, alcohol-fueled party segments were eye-catching and vivid, though skin tones looked slightly muted. Under the water, the picture wasn't quite as good, as the shadows and dark objects in the murk became muddled. Despite a good contrast ratio, the L42ET5 doesn't excel at shadow details.

Passive 3D
Unlike other Panasonic 3D HDTVs, the ET5 uses passive 3D instead of active 3D technology. This means it uses inexpensive filtered glasses instead of electronic shutter glasses, and comes with four pairs in the box. The 3D effect is very good if you look at it straight on, and even passable if you look at it from the sides. If you move higher or lower than the screen, however, crosstalk becomes heavy, making the picture look little different than if you weren't wearing glasses at all. I watched Sharks 3D on Blu-ray, and the schools of fish popped out of the dark blue of the ocean when I sat directly in front of the screen with my head at its level. When I stood up, the number of fish doubled and the picture gave me a headache. This can be a problem if you want to wall-mount the HDTV and sit on a couch to watch a 3D movie.

The L42ET5 doesn't have many energy saving settings, but it's still relatively efficient. A single Energy Saving mode slightly dims the screen but keeps it very watchable. With the mode turned off, the L42ET5 consumes an average of 82 watts under standard viewing conditions. With the mode turned on, that number drops to 70 watts.?

The Panasonic TC-L42ET5 is an inexpensive 3D HDTV with a good picture if you look at it straight on. While its passive 3D technology is convenient and economical with the included glasses, it suffers from distinct crosstalk and poor viewing angles. This means in a large group, a few viewers will be disappointed. For a budget 3D HDTV, the 55-inch Vizio M3D550KD ($1,429.99, 4 stars) remains our top pick. The 55-inch?Panasonic TC-P55ST50 ($1,699.99, 4 stars) is a larger, more expensive plasma screen that doesn't come with the active 3D glasses it needs to show 3D movies, but it offers a superior picture to Panasonic's passive LED screen. Even so, if you're on a budget and want a connected 3D TV, the ET5 is worth considering for its solid feature set and low price.
