Reflecting increasing recognition of the strategic importance of climate science communications, the American Geophysical Union and Climate One, a component of The Commonwealth Club, initiate cash award prize competitions offering $25,000 and $10,000 respectively.
Excellence in climate science communications activities is getting a boost precisely where it needs it most ? from within the scientific community and ?academy? which for too long had appeared to many to be only mildly supportive of those efforts.
The American Geophysical Union, whose annual conference each December in San Francisco, attracts more than 18,000 registrants, has now stepped-up with a newly announced $25,000 AGU Climate Communication Prize. Funded by Nature?s Own, the prize ?highlights the importance of promoting scientific literacy, clarity of message, and efforts to foster respect and understanding of science-based values as they relate to the implications of climate change,? AGU said in announcing the prize.
Nominations for the new AGU prize are due to AGU headquarters by September 30, 2011, and additional information is available by contacting unionprizes@agu.org or AGU staffers Leah Bland at 202-777-7389 or Beth Paredes at 202-777-7500.
Climate communications sessions again will be featured at the AGU meeting in San Francisco, with widely respected National Academy of Sciences Member Ben Santer of the Livermore National Laboratory delivering the second of the annual science communications plenary talks honoring the late Stephen H. Schneider of Stanford University, who passed away in July 2010. As part of the communications activities scheduled for AGU in December, The Yale Forum has taken a leadership role in sponsoring the first visit to AGU or to the United States of Skeptical Science founder John Cook, of Brisbane, Australia, who also will be making several presentations.
In addition, the first winner of a new annual award honoring Schneider for outstanding climate science communication is expected to be announced in late August by the sponsoring organization, Climate One of The Commonwealth Club of San Francisco.
