WEDNESDAY, Sept. 28 (HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that sick people who talk about advance directives don't die earlier than their counterparts who don't have those discussions about end-of-life care.

The study only looked at patients who were mildly or moderately ill, not those who were expected to die soon. And the study doesn't definitively prove that the discussions don't affect death rates.

Still, the findings suggest that "having a discussion or completing a directive doesn't lead to harm. We can promote autonomy, and not be worried that we're harming patients," said study author Dr. Stacy M. Fischer, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Fischer and her colleagues launched their study in the wake of the 2009 health care debate, after a provision that allowed funding for advance directive discussions under the Medicare program came under scrutiny, according to background information in the study. Although this provision had been in place during the George W. Bush administration, the Obama administration removed the provision from the Affordable Care Act so that the issue could not cloud the larger debate about affordable health care, the study said. The controversy also introduced the term "death panels" to the public. Media reports say no such panels -- alleged to allow doctors to make decisions about who lives or dies -- actually existed in President Obama's health care reform proposal.

Ordinary advance directive discussions can be difficult. Dr. Jennifer Mack, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School who's familiar with the findings, said patients and families sometimes don't feel positive about advance directive discussions. "They feel that the physicians who bring these issues up are not necessarily acting in their best interest, but have a particular agenda," she said.

Mack added that some people may be concerned about a "self-fulfilling prophecy" -- the idea that "if we say a patient has two weeks to live, the patient will believe that."

Fischer said she wanted to address a concern that the discussion of "death panels" implies that advance directives will "somehow lead families or health care providers into stopping providing care."

The study authors examined the medical records of 458 patients at Colorado hospitals who were asked at their bedside whether they'd taken part in discussions about advance directives. The researchers focused on 356 people who were thought to be at low (297 people) or medium (59 people) risk of dying over the next year; the study left out those who were expected to die imminently because that fact would be "driving those discussions," Fischer said.

The researchers found that 45 percent of the 356 patients said they'd had discussions about advance directives, although just 10 percent had advance directive documents included with their medical charts. Six percent had living wills, 9 percent had documents that gave someone else a durable power of attorney, and 7 percent had other types of similar documents.

About one-quarter of the patients died during the 2003-2009 follow-up period of the study. The researchers found that having a discussion about advance directives didn't boost or lower a patient's risk of death.

The researchers wrote that their study offers "limited data to counteract the misleading claims of those opposed to the advance care planning process."

Mack said the study appears to be sound, although the number of subjects is relatively small. "Trying to provide data to address some of these assumptions is probably a good thing," she said.

The study was published online Sept. 28 in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Bon Jovi Robbed of Hall of Fame Nomination!

The list of nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame came out yesterday and Bon Jovi was left off the list. I am steaming mad about it too my friends. Once the amazing band Bon Jovi was robbed of an honor they so deserve when their name was not on the list of nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sting too was left off the list, which I think is a crock of you know what as well but now we are focused on Jon and the boys. Being left off that list is such a slap in the face of a band who has standed the test of time and continues to produce killer music after all these years. It was bad enough last year that they got a nomination but were not inducted. Now they didn?t even make the cut. How many groups do you know that are not only still together after three decades but continue to sell out arena?s across the world. I myself saw them twice this year and I am dang proud of it. I realize that it takes more than just selling records to earn the famous nod [...]

Alicia Keys has been hard at work on a new album, and she was eager to offer fans something to hold them over at this weekend's much-hyped iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas, which also featured sets from Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Coldplay.

Click for photos from the iHeartRadio festival.

"I've been in the studio working on some new music, and I thought tonight would be the perfect night to play something new for you," the singer said during her Friday set. "Is it OK for me to play something brand-new? Yes, let's do it."

The R&B songstress then delivered "A Place of My Own," an uplifting, piano-driven tune about building up the courage to overcome struggles and find happiness. Despite some hoarse vocals, Keys did her best to perform the cut and continue on with her set list, which included hits like "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart," "Unthinkable" and, of course, "Empire State of Mind" with special guest Jay-Z.

" 'Cause I'm lookin' for a place to call my own/ I'm lookin' for a house to make a home/ I'm lookin' for a seat upon a throne/ I'm lookin' for a place to call my own," the singer belted alongside her live band.

Keys had earlier taken to her Twitter to share her excitement over the two-day music fest, writing, "Summer n vegas! 2nights show is gonna b insane!! Kinda wish I was n the audience! ;-) the @iHeartRadio Music Festival!"

Earlier this summer, Keys' husband and musical collaborator Swizz Beatz teased even more new music when he gushed to MTV News about a potential duet between Keys and British belter Adele.

"I just thought that, man, this would be a great moment for both of them, because they have amazing styles and they both respect each other," he explained. "They're fans of each other. So let's make this good for music."

What do you think of Alicia's new tune? Share your reviews below.

CANOE ? SLAM! Sports ? Wrestling ? Ottawa's WWE fans getting ...

Ottawa?s WWE fans getting Punked

When CM Punk grabbed the microphone on June 27 in Las Vegas, he would send a huge ripple through a world where athleticism and theatrics collide.

Punk delivered a work of brilliance, ripping WWE and its owner Vince McMahon, threatening to leave with one of the company?s championship belts.

With John Cena beaten down and laying in the ring, Punk said: ?You?re as good at kissing Vince McMahon?s ass as Hulk Hogan was.?

Score one for Punk, who continued: ?Vince McMahon is a millionaire who should be a billionaire ? he?s surrounded himself with gladhanding nonsensical yes men ? and I?d like to think that this company would be better after Vince McMahon?s dead, but the fact is it?s going to get taken over by his idiotic daughter (Stephanie McMahon) and his doofus son-in-law (Triple H) and the rest of his stupid family.?

Punk talked about other wrestlers getting their faces put on collector cups and Wrestlemania posters and appearing on Jimmy Fallon and Conan O?Brien.

It was classic. Pure Punk. Outstanding.

Punk (Phil Brooks in the real world) pushed himself to the top of a world where the ability to speak into a microphone is equally as important to swinging a folding chair or finding a cool name for your finishing move.

There was a buzz among wrestling fans. Was it scripted? Was Punk out of line?

All of a sudden, WWE ? and the 32-year-old Punk ? had their attention.

Strangely enough, while the heavily tattooed Punk was getting accolades, he says the attitude toward him by some of the company?s decision makers didn?t change.

?There are some people who think CM Punk would have been a mid-carder in the Attitude Era. They have this predetermined assessment of me,? said Punk. ?I don?t know if it?s jealousy. I don?t have six-pack abs and I can?t benchpress 400 pounds. I can?t believe I have to step over people to get their attention. They have an antiquated way of seeing things.

?I?m trying to save this business.?

He says he?s not the only one getting a RAW deal.

Said Punk: ?Beth (Phoenix) and Nattie (Neidhart) are two of the hottest things going right now. The Divas of Doom are awesome. They?ve got a female fanbase that we?ve categorically denied and I don?t know why.?

Punk quickly knew he had produced TV magic on that day in June.

?Backstage, everybody was throwing money at me, saying, ?We?ll pay your fine.? The biggest compliments have been from the guys in the back. But Vince knows money when he sees it.?

The ability to speak, to improvise, comes naturally, he says.

?When I talk, my design is to piss somebody off. I?m not just saying, ?you?re bald,? or ?you?re ugly.? Doing this is ingrained in my DNA. It?s 100% mine, all me. Half of the stuff I know off the top of my head, the other half I come up with when I?m out there. The best stuff is always the kneejerk reaction. It helps when you get somebody great to work with.

?I don?t know if it?s something you can teach. (As a kid) I didn?t walk around with a pretend plastic microphone, but I was never afraid of talking back. I used to get the crap beat out of me. But people would tire out from punching me in the face before I would stop talking back.?

Kevin Nash (remember him?) comes out to confront CM Punk at SummerSlam. Punk is coming to Ottawa?s Scotiabank place for Monday?s huge RAW TV show, a two-hour soap opera which has lasted for 18 years and 953 episodes ? watched by millions around the world.

Whether they?re cheering or booing, Punk just wants the fans to make noise.

?If they?re yelling that I suck, that doesn?t phase me,? he said. ?They can yell at me, swear at me. That?s all good.

?It?s shades of grey now. But I do think the best stuff, the best wrestling, is the good guy vs. the bad guy. That?s what the business was built on.?

?If you?re really good at being a bad guy, people appreciate it. It creates a dichotomy where they may yell for me, not at me.?

So what?s left for Punk?

?I?m running out of goals. no. 1 with a bullet would be main eventing Wrestlemania. Winning a Royal Rumble would be a feather in my cap. and I?ve never won the U.S. title, so look out Dolph Ziggler.?

Count on Punk to put his stamp on RAW at Monday?s show. Seems like he always does. RELATED LINKS

Health and Fitness ? Walking Meditation: Some Great Tips for How ...

Most of us think of meditation as sitting in the lotus position with the eyes closed, but there is a form of meditation called ?walking meditation? that is wonderful, relaxing, and something you can do anytime, anywhere.

This type of meditation is a way of finding time to meditate even while being active. The technique allows us to experience easing the mind and releasing stress as we slip into a state of ?moving meditation.? This is a great addition to the practice of sitting meditation. It adds variety to our meditation styles, and is useful when the body just doesn?t feel like sitting quietly. I encourage you to try it. Let me explain how it works.

A key component of most styles of meditation is rhythm. This is true of the I-am-peaceful meditation, breath meditation, mantra meditation, and also of walking meditation. The rhythm we create develops a sense of quietude. Meditation gives us a reprieve from restless agitation induced by our constantly chattering minds, inducing a period of rest, rejuvenation, and healing.

Walking meditation has several components. First, it?s best to find someplace you can walk undisturbed and undistracted. You will be walking very slowly. If you are walking in the vicinity of other people, you could be distracted by them, worrying about what they are thinking since you are walking at such a slow pace. You never want to be in a place where you are distracted by self-consciousness about what others may say or think as you are meditating.

Once you find the proper place for your walking meditation, begin walking, and begin to correlate your steps with your breathing. As you breathe in, lift your foot? as you breathe out, put it down. Then you do the same with the other foot and continue in this pattern, walking along with the rhythm of your breath.

Correlate your pace with your breathing, not the other way around. Just breathe naturally, and follow your breath. As you move, you will find that meditative state where your mind becomes calm, even though you are moving. The key is to just focus on your breath and walk in rhythm with it. As with regular meditation, thoughts will come. Don?t fight them or be annoyed with them. Simply allow your attention to go back to your breathing. Follow your breath. Focus your attention on that walking and breathing rhythm.

You may be wondering what you should do with your eyes as you do this. Simply look down at your feet. Watch your feet as you move them to correlate with your breath. If you are in a public place where you cannot correlate a slow walk without attracting attention, here is an alternative way to do this meditation: simply correlate two steps with each breath instead of one step, causing you to walk a little faster. Focus the eyes a little in front of you, gazing so you can see where you are going. As you breathe in, take two steps. As you breathe out, take two more.

This modification of the walking meditation technique comes in handy in places like airports and shopping malls where throngs of people surround you. It can instantly blow the stresses away, as you unwind with each breath and each step you take.

Kids And How They Can Benefit From Online Gaming - Soul Some

There are many parents who don?t like the idea of their children playing online games. Some of these parents feel that their children are wasting their time playing these games and others actually think that these games might be bad for them. Many parents would be unhappy if their child was spending too much time in front of their computer. For most parents it would be preferable for their children to be reading books or outside playing. However, online games can actually be quite beneficial for children so dismissing them entirely might not be a good idea. Here are just a few of the reasons why moderate interaction with these games does not need to be discouraged.

    • Development of cognitive and motor skills such as hand eye coordination is something that online games can do.
    • There are numerous online games that can encourage educational development by focusing on subjects such as reading, geography, mathematics and spelling. If education is made fun, then children are encouraged to learn so parents should try to incorporate games like this. Some of these games can give your children an advantage educationally so they are definitely a good idea.
    • The amount of people who work with computers every day in their jobs has increased in recent times. As time passes, we will probably see even more jobs being created that require employees to use computers all the time. The earlier children start to become comfortable with this technology, the more of a head start they are going to have in later life.
    • Children can have too much stress in their lives nowadays. But online gaming is something that a lot of children enjoy and this is great for helping to de-stress them.

As you can see there are some great benefits to playing games online. So long as children do not do so obsessively it shouldn?t lead to any harm.

Countless people enjoy playing online games today. It offers a great opportunity for a bit of rest and relaxation. There are very popular online games around at present, but amongst the most popular are Play Angry Birds Online.

Movie Review ? Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon Make ...

Walk the Line ? 2 Stars (Average)

"Walk the Line" is the story of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) and June Carter Cash (Reese Witherspoon). Born poor in Arkansas, Cash reached fame in the music world country and destroyed many relationships along the way with alcohol, drugs and prostitution. June Carter finally wins his heart.

Cash was who he was, because the songs were written and sung from the heart to do their lives, they were wrong, and lovers of musicthem in their world.

Walk the Line was to produce a battle, as it took 4 years to ensure the rights of the film and another 4 years to the film. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon has her own song, both had six months singing lessons and learned their instruments (guitar, auto harp) from the ground to play on.

Phoenix and Witherspoon showcase their talents in this film that a big story, but not had a great presentation. Based in part onThe Man in Black Book of Cash and Cash: The Autobiography, is adapting well to Gill Dennis and James Mangold, who also credited as director. There is rarely a good idea for a director is also a writer in the film itself, and Mangold showed why.

Instead of being a good hunter, it seemed that Mangold was determined, his portrayal of Johnny Cash stark naked in the woods in cash and pull through the mud and mire too long to send. It was unnecessary and added nothing to the film in myStudy. Mangold not just say, a good story and a story.

What would have ever committed the sins to cash in on his way to a legend and icon of country music without trying to bring it to an art form to be treated. Let the writer and director who is without sin cast the first stone. It seemed as if she would take money to build up.

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon to save this film. Witherspoon won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe forBest Supporting Actress. Phoenix was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe for Best Actor. Walk the Line won the Golden Globe for best film, but not on my ballot. Walk the Line won more Oscar nominations for best costume design, editing and sound mixing. Besides Witherspoon Oscars, the film has had another 27 wins and 26 nominations more.

Walk the Line, published in 2005, has taken a special place in history as Johnny Cash with Sun Records in Memphis, along with ElvisPresley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, among others.

It was reported that Johnny Cash chose Joaquin Phoenix to play him in the movie or on the basis of his performance in "Gladiator," June Carter Cash and Reese Witherspoon was chosen for his role in the film. June Carter Cash died in May 2003 shooting, and Johnny Cash died four months later in September 2003.

Cash was blessed with a deep voice and distinctive and is known as "The Man in Black". He has written more than1,000 songs and has more than 90 million albums in a career that lasted nearly five decades sold. A diverse group of artists who pay in cash at the Forum, including Bob Dylan, Chris Isaak, Wyclef Jean, Norah Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and U2.

Johnny Cash has a number of songs you do not go away soon, including "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Ring of Fire," "Man in Black" and "A Boy Named Sue signed."

Walk the Line is worth seeing just for JoaquinPhoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Do not look at him again, and it was not a better person for having seen him, it is my average would be better to write more and better direction.

A Good Solid Handbook For Understanding Flood Insurance ...

A Good Solid Handbook For Understanding Flood Insurance Coverage

A common misconception regarding homeowner?s insurance is that the policy coverage includes flood damage. However, this is not always the case. A homeowner should check the requirements of carrying flood insurance with their lender or bank, as this type of coverage is not always required. History of flooding and input from their broker are also good things to take into account.

The Federal Emergency Management Administration, or FEMA, created national flood insurance to coincide with the probability of flooding in certain ?high risk? areas. This type of insurance covers damages to a home caused by natural disasters like flash floods, landslides, hurricanes, and earth quakes. A homeowner has to check their region?s topography and community history to determine their eligibility for this coverage before they can take out a policy.

A community?s voluntary participation is needed to assist in the reduction of possible future flood damage. A homeowner has to meet special requirements as set by the NFIP before they can qualify for flood insurance. This is due to the high amount of flood claims that has caused the insurance company to lose profit in order to pay out the claims.

In these communities, there are select insurance companies that participate with the NFIP program. Only homeowners, renters and business owners are eligible to purchase a flooding insurance policy. If direct coverage is needed, typically as a last resort, it is available through the NFIP. There are many homeowners that are not aware of the fact that they are eligible for NFIP. Flood insurance will only be determined by the surrounding area and topography of the property as well as the local community will help to decide if flood insurance is required or not.

For those that have purchased a property in a flood zone are required by the Federal Government to purchase flood insurance only when they are backed by federal loans such as FHA and VA loans. For these specific areas the private lender also requires that one takes out coverage. However homeowners that live in a low flood risk area have an option of taking out a flood insurance policy. All they need do is some research on the surrounding properties as well as the topography and then make a decision as to whether they require insurance against flooding or not.

Homeowners can obtain information with regards to the areas topography and flooding patterns from the local building and land management departments as the local authorities know how severe the flooding issues are due to storms and melt offs. One can also speak to the neighbor?s as they may also be able to give you an idea of the severity of flooding in the area. Your insurance broker will also be able to advise you whether you need flooding insurance as the broker is able to look at the local claim activity. . All they need do is some research on the surrounding properties as well as the topography and then make a decision as to whether they require insurance against flooding or not.

Every state has its own requirements for homeowner insurance policies. For example, Florida is notorious for earthquakes and hurricanes. Therefore, Florida homeowners need to be knowledgeable about and familiar with hurricane insurance coverage.

Whales take passage as ice melts

Bowhead whales, the giants of the Arctic, are using the Northwest Passage to move across the top of the Americas.

Skeletons, DNA samples and harpoon heads have all suggested that bowhead populations living on each side of the continent did meet and mingle.

Now, research published in the journal Biology Letters has used satellite tags to provide confirmation.

The work may provide insights into the development of Arctic cultures in which bowhead hunting plays a central role.

Mads Peter Heide-Jorgensen from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources led a team that has satellite-tagged more than 100 bowheads over the last decade - much of the work funded by oil and gas companies interested in the Arctic's new mineral wealth.

Last August, as the Arctic sea ice neared its annual minimum, the satellite data told them that one whale from the Greenland side and one from the Alaskan side had arrived in pretty much the same area, north of the Canadian mainland.

They spent about 10 days circling in the same patch of water before heading back to their respective home ranges.

This is the first time such mingling has been seen directly, although there is plenty of circumstantial evidence that it has happened sporadically in the past.

Bowhead skeletons are found on elevated beaches through the Canadian archipelago. In 19th Century Alaska, whales were caught containing tips of harpoons that had been thrown by whalers in the Atlantic.

Passage may have been easier in the last four summers than in preceding decades, as the Arctic ice has shrunk to a smaller size than at any time in the satellite record.

"I'm pretty sure that the low sea ice in the summer has triggered this migration through this area," Dr Heide-Jorgensen told BBC News.

"I'm pretty sure that when it occurred in the past, when we got all these skulls on the beach, that was during a warm period.

"During any climatic period, there could have been years with less ice in the Northwest Passage; and I'm pretty sure the bowheads can find cracks [in the ice] that are too small to show up on satellite images."

The other fascinating line of evidence for bowhead migration along northern Canada lies in the human societies that depend on the whales, where communities are structured around the process of whaling.

The best known example today are the Inupiat of Alaska.

They are descended from the Thule culture, which appears to have emerged in Alaska about 1,000 years ago.

Thule people spread across Canada to Greenland in the three centuries following.

They ate meat and blubber from the bowhead, built houses using their bones and burned their oil.

Given their dependence on the single species, could they have made the migration without access to the whales?

Anne Jensen, an archaeologist who has lived in the northern Alaskan town of Barrow for many years and is a leading authority on the Thule people, said the routes taken by the two whales last year passed close by sites that date the Thule expansion.

"This supports the idea that the expansion was connected to whaling," she told BBC News.

"People were moving - presumably after having done some small-group exploring that is archaeologically invisible - to places where they knew whales went, perhaps in a period when the ice cover was reduced for some reason.

"Certainly, they were not settling in places where whales weren't available at that point.

"Since the Thule seem to have been able to hunt whales from the ice at leads, it doesn't mean that there was an ice-free Northwest Passage - just one that bowheads could get through, with enough leads for hunters to see and catch the whales."

Of all the great whales, the bowheads are the best adapted to life in the harsh Arctic environment, with a domed bony head that can force a way through relatively thin sheets of ice, and a thick layer of blubber.

"They have their lunch package on them - they can move for months without eating because they have blubber almost half a metre thick, so so they can move through the Northwest Passage without eating," said Dr Heide-Jorgensen.

Genetic evidence also suggests that in periods past, bowheads also moved along the northern coast of Siberia.

They do not have a set migration pattern, unlike some other whale species - which raises questions about how they may adapt in future, if the projected declines in summer Arctic sea ice materialise.

"I'm sure they will be going all over the area when there's open water," said Dr Heide-Jorgensen.

"They're capable of moving relatively long distances in a short period of time, and they can venture into areas where we haven't seen them for a very long time - so I'm sure they will use the open water if the ice disappears."

The one question mark would be over their food supply, with major changes in Arctic sea ice likely to disrupt food webs that include the swarms of copepods (tiny crustaceans) that are the key ingredient of their diet.

    KickStarting, Tippy, and the Birds - FDG {CREATIVE}

Have an idea? Need funding? You may be surprised by the transformation fundraising has undergone and the ease with which friends, neighbors, and unknown masses may play a part in helping you generate the capital to bring your idea to fruition.

Those who know me, know that I have an cushy, soft spot in my heart for non-profits and those with altruistic aspirations. Since mid-2008 my company, FDG {creative}, has invested in non-profits and causes through our >GOOD Initiative, a program we devised whereby 20% of the profit from all jobs (or 5% cash) is donated to those focused on making the world around us better. What I love about our >GOOD is that it results in branding and marketing solutions that propel an organization who otherwise cannot afford our professional services. I consider it the professional manifestation of do unto others and it hasn?t failed me yet in the karmic universe.

Since early 2009, we?ve had the pleasure of doing business in New Orleans?a place close to my heart and always inspiring to my taste buds and ear buds. This year, I was introduced by one of our New Orleans clients to SENO: Social Entrepreneurs of New Orleans. Currently, I am serving as an accelerator consultant for Matter L3C which brings me to the first cool lesson of this piece: for profit + non-profit = L3C. Consider an L3C a hybrid between traditional for profit business and non-profits. These companies bridge the gap between non-profit and for-profit investing by providing a structure that facilitates investments in socially beneficial, for-profit ventures.

For Profit + Non-Profit = MatterL3CMatter L3C is a company created by Tippy Tippens, a gifted industrial designer with enough passion and purpose to spare, hence her designation as an L3C. Together with SENO and fellow accelerator consultant John Padovan, our collaborative objective is to help her grow her passion and purpose into a full-fledged enterprise that will channel funding to cause pillars focused on health, happiness, and community.

The first formal product being launched right now is lovingly referred to by our team as the ?birdies? (AKA, The Bird Project). The birdies are naturally derived glycerin soaps that envelop contemporary ceramic bird sculptures designed to stay perched where you desire for years to come. 50% of the profit from every birdie sold is donated to local non-profits dedicated to rehabilitating the Gulf?s wildlife and coastal wetlands still recovering from the BP/Horizons oil disaster. Something I will remind those not living or working in the gulf coast region is an ever-present reality still affecting the area.

The poetic union of symbolism and utilitarianism in the design of the birdies, coupled with the cause, made me an instant fan of Tippy and an eager professional business volunteer for her company.

Today we focus on next steps for this fresh, new budding company and its consciously creative product offerings. But before Tippy had support from SENO and its consultants, Matter L3C used social media?namely innovative crowdsourcing via KickStarter?to inspire interest and spur donations to her L3C which helped produce the seed money necessary to take her product from concept to tangible reality. Her video is a great case study in the ingredients required to generate interest and financial backers in this dollar and cents seed money model:

    1. Story?without a well conceived story, your idea is just white noise
    2. Showcase?ensure your idea or product is visible and understood in your online seed money campaign
    3. Substantiate?to motivate donations, people need to know their money will be used wisely, so ensure your bid for capital supports your identity as a credible place to invest

It's like a modern day David vs. Goliath storyAround the conference table the other day at a team lunch via a food truck run, KickStarter was the topic of discussion thanks to a fun grassroots campaign aimed at funding a brand new mobile kitchen for a delectable Big Wheel food truck in Orlando. The consensus: why not kick in $5 or $10 to help them expand their yummified business? For those who have indulged on Big Wheel before, you get the investment potential thanks to the endorsement from your taste buds. If it means making the food we enjoy easier to track down and devour, what are we waiting for? Microlending has been around for a while. It is not a new concept. However, what I find noteworthy is the user-generated format by which entrepreneurs, or in this case social entrepreneurs, are taking matters into their own hands and the crowdsourcing selection process that ensues to make or break their aspirations. It?s like a modern day David vs. Goliath story, in that we, the people, can contribute to the destiny of a business or idea with just an internet connection and a few short clicks.

Loan officers, collateral, paperwork, and monthly payments are no longer the deciding factor on whether or not an idea deserves the chance to fledge?we are. And my ear buds and taste buds like the sound of that!

Chinese Trademarks Visible, But Have By Far Not Met Their ...

In absolute numbers China might be in almost all aspects a giant. But in relative sense this does not need to be the case. Example: China has 5 million registered trademarks. But only one out of 10 market entities owns a registered trademark and the number is 40 percent for companies, Yuan Qi, an official with the Trademark Department of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC), was quoted by Zhang Zhao of the China Daily. Ms?Zhang Yumin, an intellectual property (IP) rights researcher with Southwest University of Political Science and Law said, according to Zhang Zhao, that every company should have a IP management department, directly under the leadership of the decision makers and that the government should encourage companies to register trademarks, internationally and domestically.?Read more here.

Health and Fitness ? Understanding The Link Between Stress and ...

The *Center for Disease Control showed statistically that two out of three Americans are obese or overweight, making people of ideal body weight, now the minority. At the same time, the weight loss and fitness industry is a multi-billion dollar money machine. The third that are of ideal body weight aren?t buying all of the weight loss ?remedies?, and fitness gear. The problem has become an epidemic and it?s not difficult to see something is severely wrong.

Health experts have been telling us since the 1950?s that the solution to our obesity is simple: ?Eat less and exercise more?. This is obviously not working and something must missing! Well, here it is: Stress causes weight gain and here are just a few quick reasons why:

    ?

    • When you?re stressed you eat more (and usually more junk food.)
    • When you?re stressed you exercise less because you ?don?t have the time.?
    • When you?re stressed you are constantly tired and yet can?t get a good night?s sleep, which has been proven to cause weight gain.

    ?

Here is some science behind the fact; when we get locked into a stressed state we are constantly producing the hormone ?Cortisol? (also known as the ?death hormone?.) Cortisol exposure leads to increased appetite and increased belly fat, because our body?s natural mechanism to fight stress is to begin storing reserves for what might have been a very long winter, thousands of years ago, a scarcity of food or some other natural stressful state our ancestors would have encountered. Fat cells even have an enzyme called HSD that increases Cortisol levels within the cell as a way to encourage more fat storage, so you can see how the problem begins to beget more problems. An over-production of Cortisol can even destroy brain cells.

Hundreds of millions of people have tried the ?eat right? and ?exercise? routine. These two approaches are vital but the key to true health and optimal weight is living a less stressed life. Stress management is the one weight loss strategy that society hasn?t addressed. It is so dangerous to live in a constantly stressed state because it begins a downward spiral of chain reactions that compound over time. Look at the list below to see if you can relate to any of these symptoms:

Elevated Cortisol levels, caused by constant stress, leave you with the following conditions:

    ?

    • Increased appetite and food cravings
    • Increased body fat
    • Decreased muscle mass
    • Decreased bone density
    • Increased anxiety
    • Increased depression
    • Mood swings
    • Reduced libido (sex drive)
    • An impaired immune response
    • Memory and learning impairment
    • Increased symptoms of PMS (which also leads to an increased appetite)
    • Increased menopausal side effects (hot flashes, nights sweats)

    ?

Of course the scary fact is that not only will stress and increased Cortisol levels cause weight gain, when you?re stressed you are more likely to have a heart attack, higher blood pressure, become depressed, have the flu more often, and have less sex. What a dismal picture! Stress and weight gain are clinically linked, and are at the root of all these issues. You can change your life in a very short time by addressing the correct root of these problems, so I encourage you to begin assessing how stressed you are, and begin making changes today. You won?t regret it!

(AP) ? Pessimism about Greece's financial problems returned to the financial markets Monday. Stocks fell sharply as investors once again doubted that the country will be able to avoid a default on its debt.

Even after a late-day rally cut its losses by nearly half, the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 108.08, or 0.9 percent, at 11,401.01. The drop ended five days of gains for stocks and marked the return of the back-and-forth trading that has accompanied the uncertainty about Europe's debt crisis.

The Nasdaq composite fell 9.48, or 0.4 percent, to 2,612.83. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 11.92, or 1 percent, to 1,204.09. The S&P 500 gained 5.4 percent last week as it appeared Greece would get its bailout. But European finance ministers said Friday they would delay authorizing an $11 billion installment of emergency funds for Greece until October.

On Monday, the country's finance minister held an emergency teleconference with its international creditors. They are pressuring the government on austerity measures to reduce Greece's debt. Investors fear Greece won't be able to convince lenders that it can pay its debts ? and that it won't get the money it needs to avoid a default on debts that must be paid next month.

Late Monday, Greece's finance minister said that the 2 1/2-hour conference call was "productive and substantive." Hope that Greece might be closer to qualifying for rescue funds started a late comeback. The Dow gained about 100 points in the last hour of trading.

But investors also appeared pessimistic about a Federal Reserve policy decision expected Wednesday. Some economists believe that since the Fed decided to hold a two-day meeting instead of the originally planned one-day session, that it was preparing to take steps to stimulate the economy. However, other analysts doubt that the Fed will announce a new plan for the economy.

There is too much disagreement among Fed officials about monetary policy for a decision right now, said Ralph Fogel, head of investment strategy at Fogel Neale Partners in New York. "They'll have to let it play out at least a little while longer, and I think they'll wait until November," Fogel said.

Separately, President Barack Obama on Monday called for $1.5 trillion in new taxes to help reduce the U.S. deficit. He said, "we can't just cut our way out of this hole."

The proposal is being opposed by House Speaker John Boehner, who has said the Republican Party won't accept any tax increases to lower deficits. Obama's speech marked the start of a new round of deficit-reduction negotiations that are likely to be contentious.

For investors, the day's news added up to more uncertainty. "The market just can't stand not knowing what's going on," Fogel said.

Investors have been sensitive to each development that emerges from Europe, and that has helped feed the volatility in stocks the past few months.

"After every meeting in Europe there's a spin put on it -- either 'this was good and a solution's really soon,' or someone looks the wrong way and the media says there's no solution," said Rob Lutts, president and chief investment officer of Boston-based Cabot Money Management.

If Greece were to default on its debt, other European countries with heavy debt would likely be judged less credit-worthy and have difficulty borrowing money. But the problems go beyond Europe. U.S. bank stocks have fallen on concerns that a default would make it hard for European banks to pay their bills ? including the billions of dollars that U.S. banks have lent them. There are concerns about a lending crisis similar to what the world saw in 2008.

There is also concern about a recession in Europe, which already has a weak economy. The companies in the S&P 500 get 20 percent of their net income from European countries. If their business suffers, that could also hurt the struggling U.S. economy.

The uncertainty wasn't limited to U.S. investors. In Europe, Germany's DAX closed 2.8 percent lower. France's CAC-40 fell 3 percent, and the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares fell 2 percent. Those markets closed before the news about the teleconference between Greece and its creditors.

Lutts, the Cabot analyst, said some investors are also uneasy about earnings reports that will start arriving in early October.

"In the last year or so we had a nice ramp-up in earnings -- that's history now," Lutts said. He said companies are contending with the steady rise this year in commodities and raw materials prices, and many are unable to raise their own prices because that hurt their ability to compete.

"The market is worried that (earnings reports) won't be rosy and that we'll see a downshift, not an upshift, in earnings."

Investors were again buying U.S. government debt, which is seen as a safe place when the economy is weak and stocks are falling. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which falls as investors buy bonds and push its price higher, fell to 1.95 percent, near its low for the year. It was at 2.07 percent late Friday.

The U.S. dollar, another asset seen as safe, also rose against a basket of foreign currencies. Concerns about the stability of the European economy pushed the Euro lower against the dollar, to $1.36 from $1.38 late Friday.

In corporate news, Goodrich Corp. rose 16 percent on speculation that United Technologies Corp. is interested in buying the aerospace manufacturer. United Technologies fell 1.2 percent.

Tyco International Ltd. rose 2 percent after the manufacturer announced a plan to split into three companies.

Lennar Corp. rose 5 percent after the homebuilder's earnings met Wall Street's expectations and revenue came in stronger than expected. The company said that while it delivered fewer homes in its fiscal third quarter, demand is picking up somewhat, driven by low home prices and all-time low interest rates. The company was cautious about the future, however, because of high unemployment.

Netflix fell 7 percent after the company said it was formally separating its online streaming service from its mail-in DVD rental service, which is being renamed Qwikster.

Chinese solar equipment factory Jinko Solar plunged 28 percent after it was forced to shut down one of its factories because of protests by local residents who claimed it was polluting the air and water.

About six stocks fell for every one that rose. Trading was light, at 3.7 billion shares.

Why won't my husband sleep with me?

Wayne Koestenbaum, the author of the new book "Humiliation," is answering questions from Salon readers over the next several days about their most shameful and cringe-worthy moments. Have a question of your own? Send it to askwayne@salon.com.

    Dear Wayne,

My husband of eight months now prefers masturbation,? with or without porn, to having sex with me. He had a stroke four months ago and claims that he is afraid if we have sex that he will have another stroke.

It is humiliating to have him prefer his hand to me and deny that he is masturbating when I walk in the room as he is climaxing. Then he gets up -- still denying the act! -- and drips ejaculate across the carpet.

What can I do? I?am a healthy, willing and able female and did not get married to continue auto-eroticism as my sole sexual outlet.

Dear Healthy, Willing and Able Female:

That's a tough situation, but not without solutions or palliatives.

    1. If you've have only been married for eight months, you're still in the "probation" period, which means you can either annul the marriage, divorce him, ask for a formal or informal separation or issue some other sort of ultimatum. If you find him sexually a dud, and want to move on to another arrangement, with someone else, don't feel embarrassed about your wish: make a demand to your negligent husband ("We'll have sex together, or I'll drop you"), and see what happens.

    2. Imitate your husband. Start masturbating in a room that you know he'll enter. When he enters, don't deny that you're masturbating, but ask him to watch. Or just smile at him, and say hi.

    3. When you find your husband masturbating, join him. Pull up a chair in front of him, and say, "It turns me on to watch you jerk off." Or: Start masturbating with him. Not to taunt him, but simply to join in on the fun.

    4. Initiate conversations with him about how exciting you find masturbation to be. Say, "I consider masturbation a totally legitimate sexual practice."

    5. Ask your husband what he suggests you do sexually together: If he can't have intercourse, because he fears it will catalyze another stroke, then suggest other forms of mutual stimulation and erotic companionship.

    6. Ask your husband if you can sleep with another guy on the side. Have a "fuck buddy." A brief affair, non-emotional.

    7. I don't mean these suggestions to be offhand or impolite.

    8. Your husband probably feels extremely humiliated when you catch him masturbating. Try to assuage his guilt; assure him that you think it's terrific that he's masturbating.

    9. The detail about "dripping ejaculate over the carpet" is astonishing: It suggests that your husband is somewhat careless about appearances and cleanliness. You might suggest that he use what is known as a "cum towel."

    10. Does your husband use porn when he masturbates, or does he masturbate with his fantasies as sole stimulants? If he uses porn, you could discuss the porn with him; start a non-judgmental discussion with him about the images. Say which ones you like, which ones you don't. Comment on the bodies in the porn. If he doesn't use porn, buy or download some porn and watch it with him.

    11. Share some masturbation memories of your own with your husband. Tell him about the first times you masturbated, when you were a girl. Ask him what it was like when he first discovered masturbation. My basic advice: Remove the atmosphere of toxicity or shame around masturbation, and don't consider it the antithesis of interpersonal sex. Good luck!

    Your friendly guide,

    Wayne

International: True Blood gets another lesbian | Relationship

Finally, the sexiest show on TV again for the fourth season. The fang banging sensation, True Blood, returned to the United States on Sunday night, and with a touch of new surprises lesbian, she has a boyfriend. Never one to shy away from problems that had previously embraced True Blood characterization of gay characters, with some appearing on the show at one time, and dominated by his gay storyline. Whist Anatomy Grey, Pretty Little Liars and lesbian women's glee all the features, no other major events is equivalent to a series of lesbian vampire characters and numbers. In fact, the annual GLAAD's "where they are on TV" study shows that True Blood is the most gay friendly show on television with six regular or recurring lesbian, gay characters, bisexual, or transgender.

And now here comes the best Sookie's friend Tara! Troubled Tara featured in lesbian relationships in the first episode of the new season, and he simply added togetherarray of characters and sometimes hot lesbian camp as Anne Sophie Nan Flanagan, and certainly shows the most preferred lesbian characters, prot?g? of Eric, Pam. While some critics may argue that he has a lesbian storyline in reaction to a series of traumatic relationships with male characters, especially the opening scene he puts in street fighter / fight club Tomb Raider-esque scenario, shows and girlfriend fighting cage, many argue this side of sexuality that Tara has come for a long time. Tara has been from the beginning of True Blood show characteristics somewhat lesbian, tombish properties, characterization fierce, Naomi and her new relationship, it seems to bring out the softer side of Tara zen too. Tara lesbian storyline shows great promise, and after the sex scene in episode one, this indicates that only get steamier. True Blood returning to Australia August 18 at the Showcase.
